  1. U&T Analysis in a home care environment

  2. Interactive Nursing Terminal (IVT) • Developed as part of IBBT-Coplintho project. • IVT offers digital planning and patient information to the nurse on the road. • Developed for nurses of a Flemish home care organisation.

  3. What is a User & Task Analysis • Users, Tasks and Environment • Why: Gain insight in how users perform their tasks and in what kind of environment. • Create a better match between the application and its users.

  4. Methods used • Observations • Contextual inquiry • Personas and use scenario’s • Hierarchical Task Analysis & Task-Centered System Design

  5. Contextual inquiry of home care nurses • 19 observations: • Different regions • Different roles within the organization • Different observation moments • Years of experience • Special attention to: • Administrative tasks performed by the nurse on the road. • Interaction between the office and the nurses on the road

  6. Contextual inquiry of home care nurses • Home care are very private situations. • Keep out of the way during observations. • Difficult to probe during the observations.

  7. Task analysis for the IVT • Three primary personas • Three task hiërarchies

  8. Task analysis for the IVT

  9. Task analysis for the IVT • Three primary personas • Three task hiërarchies • Three sets of task • descriptions and requirements • How does the user organizes her round? • Before the nurse starts her round she puts the patiënts she needs to pay a visit in a sequence that suites her and her patients best. She creates the sequence based on the list of patients and nursing actions and tries to create an efficient route. She writes down the patients names on a piece of paper according to the created sequence. She knows the adresses of most patients by hart. Most of the time she tries to use the same sequence every time she does a certain round. • Make sure nurses can change the sequence of their rounds. • Every nurse should be able to save her own sequence. • When there are precise time appointments with patients the nurse should be notified in a clear way.

  10. Task analysis for the IVT • Knowledge of the medical domain and health care policies is essential. • Requirements often conflict with regulations. • Spending time with experts from the field partly compensates the lack of knowledge.

  11. Conclusion • Despite the difficulties encountered results turned out to be very helpful in the development process. • Use of standard HCI-methods is possible in health care settings when adjusted to the special characteristics of the field. • The use of user centered design methods will help to create usable ehealth applications.
