  1. 4 Safety Tips For Sharing The Road With Large Trucks

  2. Sharing the road with large commercial trucks is probably an everyday occurrence as you drive in and around the Kansas City area. However, simply because it is something you have to do on a regular basis, does not mean that you are 100 percent comfortable with it. In fact, most people who drive passenger vehicles are not very comfortable sharing the road with semi-trucks.

  3. Fortunately, there are some driving habits that you can adopt in order to decrease your chances of becoming involved in an accident with a large truck. The next time you have to ride in close proximity to a semi truck, keep these safety tips in mind.

  4. Don’t Linger In The “No Zone”

  5. The “No Zone” of a large truck is its blind spots, which are often quite large. These areas are located in the front, back and on both sides of semis. In general, if you cannot see the side mirrors of a truck, then you should assume that the driver cannot see you. If you have to drive through a truck’s blind spot, try to do so speedily and get out of the “No Zone” as quickly and safely as possible.

  6. Be Careful While Passing

  7. Use all of the passing rules you learned in your driver’s education class when you pass a truck. Be sure that the truck driver can see you in the side mirror before you start the passing action. Use your turn signal to alert the trucker to your intentions and then make your move. Before you pull back in front of the truck, make you sure you get far enough ahead that you can see the vehicle in your rearview mirror. Also, do not ever pass a truck while going downhill or on the right.

  8. Keep Your Distance

  9. Whether you are travelling in front of a semi or behind one, always try to keep as much space as possible between the truck and your vehicle. The main reason for this is that trucks have very limited handling capabilities. In other words, trucks need much longer to speed up or slow down than passenger vehicles do. In addition, they cannot handle certain road conditions very well, such as inclines.

  10. Stay Focused

  11. While you should never try to multitask behind the wheel, when you are riding close to a large commercial truck, it becomes even more vital to maintain your focus. Keep both hands on the wheel and pay extra attention to what is going on around you, not just with the truck, but what other vehicles are doing as well. A wrong move by another passenger vehicle can easily cause a wreck.

  12. While the above tips can reduce your risk of an accident with a large truck, it may be impossible to avoid a wreck, eventually. If you or a loved one has been involved in a collision with a commercial truck, contact Kansas City truck accident attorney.
