  1. Chapter 6 Writing Process

  2. Section 6.2 Executing the writing plan

  3. Objectives: • Identify each step of the writing process • Describe the importance of the post writing stage • Explain the publishing process

  4. Key Terms • Proofreading • Publishing • Formatting • Layout • Readability • Revising • Editing • Objectivity • Criticism • Constructive Criticism • Deconstructive Criticism

  5. The writing stage and first draft • The writing stage is- creating rough drafts and getting ideas “on paper”. • The goal for the writing stage is- getting your ideas on to your paper in sentence form. • First draft- is the first stage to the writing process - The reader does not see this draft, therefore you can begin where ever - for example: you could begin at the top of your outline and work to the bottom, or vice versa. You could also start somewhere in the middle of your outline.

  6. Do’S AND DON’T FOR THE FIRST DRAFT • DO • DO move things around if the flow is out of order • DO include more information rather than less • DO maintain your train of thought • DON’T • DON’T worry about the organization of the material • DON’T worry about precision • DON’T revise as you write

  7. Now time for- Revising • Revising is- the process of rewriting paragraphs and sentences to improve organization and content. As well as, checking the structure of the document as a whole. • Start revising by reviewing aspects that affect the whole message such as content and organization. • Make sure you are reading from the readers point of view- the best way to do is is distance yourself from the writing.

  8. Objectivity • Taking a break from your writing lets you have- - Objectivity-is to be free of personal feelings, prejudice, or interpretations. • Once you have read your work objectively you can ask yourself- -Is the message effective? • Has all necessary information been included? • Do my sentences flow logically?

  9. Editing • Editing- is a more refined form of revising- it focused on sentence construction, wording, and clarity of ideas. • Revising- focuses on constructing the content…Editing is polishing the document until it is in its finished form • When editing you may want or need feedback from your peers- • Criticism- is a comment that expresses unfavorable judgment or disapproval of a person or action .

  10. Constructive Criticism- • Constructive criticism- is giving well-reasoned opinions about the work of others. • recognize that the reviewer is providing a critique of the writing, not criticizing the writer. • In the work place there will be occasions where it is necessary to give constructive criticism therefore you must learn to- -control your body language and tone of voice -begin and end with a positive remark or compliment -offer specific suggestions, not vague comments -give the other person a chance to respond

  11. Postwriting- • This is the third step in the writing process- in this stage a final edit of the work is completed. • Proofreading- is checking the final copy for correct spelling, punctuation, and for typographical errors (aka a typo). • Ways to proofread- • Read slowly and focus on the accuracy of the message • Use a grammar checker on the computer, then proofread on your computer screen • Print a copy and mark errors • Read a copy aloud, then have a peer look over it and mark errors

  12. Proofreading and marks • Incorrect word usage that changes the meaning of the sentence- Example- The courts have ruled that this type of business is now legal. - the intended meaning: the activity is not legal. Change now to not, or legal to illegal. • Publishing- the process of preparing a document for distribution. -publishing makes content available to the receiver

  13. Formatting • Formatting- is the placement and style of type in a document. • - formatting is important because it affects how the message is presented to the reader. • Layout- is the relationship of the text to white space • Readability- is a measure of whether the document is easy to read or not

  14. Reviewing your knowledge • 1. Summarize the writing stage • 2. How should the process of revising be approached? • 3.What does it mean to be objective? • 4.Explain why feedback is sometimes perceived as criticism. How can professionalism be demonstrated when giving feedback?
