  2. Peter Green • He is the founder of Fleetwood Mac, a famous band • He was diagnosed with schizophrenia in the mid 70’s • Spent time in psychiatric hospitals and went through electroconvulsive therapy • Drug abuse was the cause of his mental illness

What is Schizophrenia? • A long-term mental disorder that interferes with ones thoughts and actions and leads to delusions, which are false beliefs • Causes hallucinations; the person sees something that’s not there • Some symptoms include thought disorders which are unusual ways of thinking and movement disorders that may appear as agitated body movements

  4. How does schizophrenia develop? • Genetics • Drug abuse • Chemical Imbalance • Smoking

  5. Treatments for Schizophrenia • Schizophrenia can be treated using antipsychotic medications • Chlorpromazine, Haloperidol, Perphenazine and Fluphenazine are all antipsychotic medications • In the 1990’s the developed a new medication called clozapine and it’s the most effective

Some Facts • Onset symptoms of the disorder typically occur during young adulthood • Approximately 2.2 million people in the USA have schizophrenia, and 51 million people worldwide • 50 times higher risk of attempting suicide than the general population and suicide is the number one cause of premature death among people with schizophrenia
