  8. Functionality: • Designer • Company • End User • Perhaps calculations: • What web pages do you go to that perform calculations? • Perhaps interactivity: • Games, forms, surveys • Maybe offer format for videos and music What else might go into the design?

  9. How do we go from these ideas to the actual making and crafting of the web site? = So how do you suppose, we get there from here?

  10. That code tells the browser, “Wake up, stupid. Here comes some text and you better display it as red text, at that.” Wake Up Stupid! Underlying every web page is a code of some form

  11. The code might also make the text hyperactive so that the user would click on it and then the browser would have to display something else on the screen, all together Underlying every web page is a code of some form

  12. 1957-The Russians launched a satellite in space called the Sputnik A short history-How It All Started

  13. This picture appeared in the Russian newspaper depicting the importance that the the Russian satellite had on the space program. Sputnik-The first Satellite launched in orbit by humans!

  14. The United States wasn’t very happy about this…Why?

  15. What is an ICBM? • An inter-continental ballistic missile It proved that the Russians had the first ICBM system

  16. The United States accelerated its offensive and defensive missile programs • It kicked off the space race • It was indirectly responsible for the creation of the internet! This caused three things to happen

  17. 1958-President Dwight Eisenhower started ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Association) whose main mission was to develop computer science technology ARPA-an organization

  18. They had to join together four computers that ran on four different operating systems • It was constructed from a series of phone lines. They called their network ARPANET. ARPANET

  19. •1973-Engineers began to think of ways to connect their network w/o using phone lines. The First Wireless

  20. They developed a new way by sending “packets” over the radio waves and called their new network PRNET(for packet radio network) PRNET

  21. 1977-The Satellite Network (SATNET) was joined to the other two networks and the concept of inter-networking was born. Telstar 1 SATNET

  22. While the idea seemed a worthy one, each network had its own set of rules called Protocol which made for a difficult problem. Language Barriers

  23. The NCP (Network Control Protocol) Protocol was established and the internet was the result
