  2. What is Tyre Out? • A group for young people aged between 16 and 30 with limited mobility or disability. • Aim: Making the impossible, possible • Tyre Out makes it possible for members to be involved in a wide range of activities • Friends and family are also welcome!

  3. Why Tyre Out? • To fill the lack of activities for young • people with limited mobility or disabilities in Northern Ireland • We provide the “tools” that enable people to enjoy their free time

  4. organising wide range of activities in Northern Ireland involving Sports Arts and Culture Orienteering events etc. members are involved in the decision process of activities Opportunity for members to use our State Of The Art Equipment What we do

Equipment • Various Types top of the range specialised wheelchair and hand cycles: • Top End Accelerator Hand Cycle • Top End Crossfire All Terrain Chair • Top End Transformer Multi Sports Chair • (which is adaptive to all sports ) • from Northern Healthcare: • three Types top of the range specialised wheelchairs and hand cycle • Top End Accelerator Hand Cycle • Top End Crossfire All Terrain Chair • Top End Transformer Multi Sport Chair • (which is adaptive to all sports)

  10. Organising accessible Events • Action Plans can be used in helping you organise an Event that involves disabled participants • To show how much Action Plans are needed, we are going to decide a few between us

  13. Idea’s Generation • Keep an open mind • Be creative and daring • Find a champion • Assessment • Identify target group • Understand particular needs (incl. equipment) • Ask those who know • “Walk a Mile in His/Her Shoes”

  14. Remember Peripherals • Transport • Car Parking • Toilets • Storage Space (for equipment) • Catering/eating facilities

  15. Weather • Will bad weather significantly alter terrain? • Is there an alternative? • Mixing Ability • It’s an Event, not a Disabled event • Encourage able-bodied friends

  16. Getting Buy-In • Involvement. “With” not “For”. • Make it Social, not just Physical • Build on existing friendships • Overcoming concerns • Of Participants • Of Parents

  17. Raising Awareness • Targeted advertising and Editorial • Create Database/mailshot • Facebook/Social Networking sites • Manning • Linked to assessment • Enlist Volunteers • Clarify roles & responsibilities

  18. What we have learned about organising accessible Events • Venue research: Get someone with a disability to check the Venue • Different Disability means different ability • Personal Assistance needed? Helping with Archery, transfer, going to toilet etc. • Accessible Toilet facilities?
