  4. College and Career Readiness Objective (District Average) • Increase graduates who meet college/career readiness to 80% by 2015.

How’s College Readiness Determined? • Postsecondary Education Readiness Test (PERT), ACT, or SAT • Given to all 11th grade students • The scaled scores on the PERT Placement range is 50 – 150. • Mathematics – 113 is the college readiness cut score. • Reading - 104 is the collegereadiness cut score.

SOME HARD FACTS: • 1) Based on ACT-tested high school graduates, it appears that only about half of our nation’s ACT-tested high school students are ready for college-level reading and writing. • 2) What’s worse, more students are on track to being ready for college level work in eighth and tenth grade than are actually ready by the time they reach twelfth grade.

  10. The Solution – Common Core What is Common Core and how does it work? READINGFOCUS: • 1) Teach students to read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and implicitly. • 2) Teach students to cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

  11. 3) Teach students how to determine central ideas or themes and how to analyze and summarize key supporting details and ideas. • 4) Teach students how to interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text and how to analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone.

  12. 5) Show students how point of view or purpose shapes the content and style of text. • 6) Introduce students to complex literary and informational texts and teach them how to analyze and synthesize the author’s purpose, tone and theme.

  13. Writing Focus • 1) Teach students how to write arguments to support claims in an analysis of topics and texts. • 2) Teach students how to write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately.

  14. 3) Teach students how to introduce and develop a topic through the use of organization, support, precise language, sentence fluency, and appropriate and varied transitions. • 4) Teach students how to draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

  15. 5) Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences.

  16. Conclusion • Our plan is to develop students to such an extent that they are COLLEGE READY and/or ready for an exciting career path in a highly competitive world. With your help and your student’s initiative, we will succeed.

  18. Reading Proficiency 2013 Results • Students reading at or above proficiency was 31% Graded 9-12 • Lowest Quartile Learning Gains 71% • Overall Learning Gain 9-11 was 61%

Action Plan • Concentration on our level 3, 4, and 5s • Computer Lab rotation each week (FCAT Explorer, Florida Achieves, Learning Station, Vocabtest.com) • FAIR Testing and data collection for areas of strengths and weaknesses • All content areas complete a Rhetorical Triangle activity for literacy • Incorporate Common Core standards • Introduce rigorous text • Content areas use DBQ’s and Close Reading Strategies • Differentiate Instruction • Periodic Data Chats • Enrichment-21st Century and Saturday Success Camp • Teachers work on the work in PLCs and PSDs

Why is the Biology EOC Important • Counts towards 30% of the students overall grade. • Final grade and credits are held until EOC results are released. • 70% of student grade is the average of the semester and exam grades. • 20% of all jobs require a high level of knowledge in any one of the STEM areas.

  31. Biology EOC Strategies • Using Learning Stations to familiarize students with computer based testing. • Spiral content knowledge after disaggregating the data obtained from mini-assessments. • Hands-on labs • Problem-based learning.

Social Studies Goals • Help to increase reading proficiency in all Social Studies students. • Expose 12th grade students to life management skills by exposing them to financial literacy benchmarks. -END OF COURSE EXAM • Decrease the amount of students in the bottom tier on the EOC. • Increase the amount of students in the middle and high tier. • Increase the overall mean score on the US EOC to be in closer range to the State and County mean score.

  34. Social Studies Initiatives *9-10 Social Studies A. Literacy Fridays: Extended practice in reading and test taking. B. FCAT Explorer Initiative: All 9 & 10 grade students in Social Studies will work on reading strategies and critical thinking. *11-12th Social Studies C. End of Course exams mini-assessments: 11th grade students will take practice mini-assessments to help expose them to the benchmarks they will be tested on during the EOC. D. Financial Literacy Benchmarks: 12th graders will be exposed to essential benchmarks that will teach them financial life skills to assist their future decision making. -

EOC Facts • Entirely computer based, except for students with pertinent IEPs or 504 Plans • Based on Florida’s 9-12 US History Standards. • Content covers the Civil War through the present, Multiple Choice only • Questions based on historical documents are included in the test. • Questions are written on a 10th grade level.

The Plan • Continue to prepare and assess students for industry certification. • 71 students are currently certified in one of the Adobe applications as of Friday 9/27. • Overcome • Purchase additional computers with CAPE money • Use district DVD's supplied by the county • Web-based instructional resources • Upgrade current technology as funds permit.

  40. In addition • Saturday Camp begins Oct. 5th lab in 201 will be available for learning the Adobe industry certification software.
