  1. Looking at Headlines You will notice in news article headlines that: • They do not use full sentences or correct grammar • They can be different lengths and print sizes • They aim to get the readers’ interest, so that they will read the article

  2. EYE-CATCHING HEADLINES PUNS are a play on words.

  3. EYE-CATCHING HEADLINES ALLITERATION is the use of the same letter or sound in two or more words that are close together. It is used to make it more enjoyable to read and memorable.

  4. EYE-CATCHING HEADLINES RHETORICAL QUESTIONS are asked merely for effect with no answer expected.

  5. Activity TASK #1 Refer to – What technique is that? Determine which technique is being used in each newspaper headline. Write another heading using an alternate language technique.

  6. Activity TASK #2 Look through a newspaper and find examples of headlines using: • Pun • Alliteration • Rhetorical Question Write them in your book.

  7. Activity TASK #3 Your teacher will give you a news article with no headline. • Read the article. • Write three different headlines for the article, using: • Pun • Alliteration • Rhetorical Question • In groups of four, share your headlines. Discuss which headline is most effective. Why?
