  3. Graduation Requirements Must earn 14 credits to reach 12th grade status

  4. Academic Honors Diploma Students must fulfill all but one of the following: 4 Units English 4 Units Math, including Alg 1, Geometry, & Algebra 2 3. 4 Units Science, including Physics & Chemistry 4. 4 Units Social Studies 5. 3 Units Foreign Language (3 of one or 2 of two) 6. 1 Units Fine Arts 7. Unweighted 3.5 cumulative GPA 8. 27 ACT or 1210 SAT

  5. Grades & G.P.A. • Semester Grades are Recorded on the Transcript (Your academic Record). • A semester grade is comprised of two quarters and the semester exam. • GPA is important for Post-High School Plans • F’s earn no credit and are NEVERremoved from the student’s transcript. More information available on the website or in the student planner.

  11. World Language, Fine Art, and/or Business Requirement • A student must complete one credit from one of the academic areas above in order to graduate. • The 1.0 credit can be a combination of a half credit from 2 different areas.

  12. Physical Education/Health Health • Required Course (#000911) – ½ Credit • Elective: Honors Pre-Med Health (1 Credit) Physical Education • ½ credit required, 2 semestersLeisure/Individual Activities Competitive Team Games Walking for Fitness Physical Fitness & Yoga Advanced Strength Training (before school) • Students who participate in SHS Sports may be eligible for PE Waiver, waiving the P.E. Requirement. .

  13. P.E. Waiver • A way to complete one’s Physical Education requirement. • Students receive no credit and no grade. • Student may waive P.E. requirement by completing two full seasons of SHS athletics, cheerleading or marching band. • Physical Education Waiver Application and more information can be found on the SHS Guidance Website. • Students may not mix P.E. Waiver with Physical Education classes to meet the requirement. Must have 2 waivers or 2 courses, not one of each.

  14. World Language Options: French • German • Spanish • NEW: Honors offered for level II and III. • 2 years of a World Language is recommended for College Entrance • Must have Prerequisite • If you earned a D in pre-requisite, the next course will be difficult

Honors Courses The Honors Student: Does extra Reading…Thoroughly Answers Essay Questions…Fully Participates in Class Discussions…Does all Homework…Willingly does Research…Commits to Spending Time in Challenging Courses • Students may change levels within the first 3 days of the semester…with parent permission…Beyond this, changes must be teacher initiated and only for students who are struggling with D’s or F’s • Will have Required summer readings and/or projects

  20. Credit Flexibility • Credit Flexibility allows students to earn credit by demonstrating academic and skill level performance through a variety of educational options. • Approved credit awarded through these guidelines will be posted on a student’s transcript and counted as required graduation credit in the related subject area or as an elective. • A student must complete the Credit Flexibility Application and obtain approval PRIOR to beginning the coursework. • See the SHS Guidance website for more information and the Application.

  21. Athletic Eligibility • Must pass 5 classes (not including P.E.) the quarter preceding the season. • If a student earns less than 2.0 GPA during the quarter preceding the season of participation, student will be put on an Academic contract.

  22. PSEOP Post Secondary Enrollment Options Program • Earn High School and College Credit at the Same Time • Students must apply and be accepted by the Post-Secondary Institution.(requires specific GPA and Placement Test score) • Both student and parent MUST attend Mandatory Meeting on March 6th at 1:00 or 6:30 in Auditorium. • If interested, indicate this on Course Selection Sheet. • At this time, indicate other courses as if you will be at SHS.

  23. Things to remember when selecting courses: • You may choose no more than 3 release periods. • It can be very hard to change electives after the schedule is created. • Classes can only be dropped during the first 3 days of the semester. • A parent note is needed to drop/change courses. • After the 3 days, level changes must be initiated by the teacher. • You must have a plan for making up failed courses. • Requested release time may be eliminated without notification in order to fit selected courses

Make sure you are following a college preparatory course of study: • English 4 Credits • Math 4 Credits • Science 3 Credits • Social Studies 3 Credits • Health and P.E. ½ Credit each • Foreign Language 2 Credits • Personal Finance ½ Credit • Fine Art 1 Credit

SAT and ACT • Students should take both at least once (twice recommended) between Winter and Spring Junior year.(optional retake Senior year) • When registering, make sure the results are sent to Strongsville High School (school code is 364855). • Some schools require the scores sent directly to them from the testing agency (i.e. Miami &OSU). Make sure you are aware if the schools you are applying to require this. • Highly Selective school applicants: check to see if your school requires SAT Subject tests.

SAT vs. ACT • Six times per year • Covers Math, Reading, Science and • Writing • No points deducted for wrong answers • 1-36 composite score • Accepted in and out of state • Seven times per year • Covers Math, Reading, and Writing • ¼ point deducted for wrong answers • 200-800 /section for a total score of 600-2400 • Accepted in and out of state

TestRegistration You can register for the tests at the following websites: SAT ACTwww.collegeboard.comwww.actstudent.org May 3rd – Register by April 4th April 12th – Register by March 7th June 7th – Register by May 9th June 14th – Register by May 9th • Expect to spend at least 45 minutes registering • You will need a credit card • Please register at least 6-8 weeks before the scheduled test.
