  6. Culture of Jazz • Jazz finds it’s roots in early African American music, the blues, and ragtime. • The first jazz band to record was “The Original Dixieland Jazz Band,” in 1917. Their phonograph record created a sensation in the United States, as well as overseas. • Louis Armstrong innovated jazz by bringing the soloist to the forefront of the music. • In the 20’s – 40’s, Big Band jazz emerged as the most popular music of the era. • WWII economy drives large ensembles out of work, and bebop jazz appears. These smaller groups revolutionize jazz. • A variety of styles are born over the next 50 years, including Modal, Cool, Fusion, and others. • Jazz is now a celebrated worldwide phenomenon. Most countries have a jazz scene to some degree.

But, because of its versatility, jazz is often blended with other styles of music: R&B, rock, latin, classical. You name it.
