  1. Character Ethics: Plato

  2. Plato’s Teleology (View of the Universe) • Everything in the universe has a proper function to perform within a harmonious hierarchy of purposes. • For humans, we live the morally good life insofar as we perform our distinctly human function well. • Like food for the body, virtue is healthy for the soul because it makes us complete human beings

  3. Plato believed in the Tripartite Soul:

  4. Balance of the Soul • A person with a balanced will have all three elements equal • A person with an unhealthy soul will not have all three elements equal • For example lying to gain something maybe damaging the emotional or intellectual element in your soul

  5. Plato and Ethics • Some behavious are absolutely right and others wrong. • Ideal forms existed for everything in the universe including ethical ideals • We may not know what they are but through knowledge and growth of the soul we create ethical behaviour

  6. Aristotle’s Ethics • We become ethical individuals as a result of two major influences: • Knowledge that we acquire and habits that we develop • We may know what is right (knowledge) but it is still up to us to act on it (habit) • For Aristotle HAPPINESS is the “good life”. • Happiness is an activity rather than a goal, and is present when one is behaving :ethically” • He believed that “The Golden mean” or moderation is the key to happiness.
