  2. The Songhai Builds an EmpireBefore Askia (Introduction) • Songhai kingdom grew from trade center a strong empire under rule of Sunni Ali • Sunni Ali = the leader who put the Songhai empire on the map Songhai Empire

  3. Sunni Ali’s Death • Sunni Ali replaced by son, Sunni Baru, who = Muslim • His different beliefs worried towns people they rebelled • leader of rebellion = a man named Muhammad Ture • later took title askia; then developed into Askia the Great Sunni Ali

Religion and Education • Askia = very much like Mansa Musa: • took religion seriously (took a pilgrimage to Mecca after rebellion) • worked to support education • Timbuktu = re-invented with universities, schools, libraries, and mosques • Famous University = University of Sankore • Djenné = also a center of learning; a lot of their focus = medicine.

Trade and Government • merchants from far away came to trade with Timbuktu, Djenn’e and Gao • most of Songhai’s traders = Muslim it encouraged the growth of Islamic influence • Askia set up 5 Provinces: removed local leaders & appointed new governors that he trusted • 1 governor ruled during Askia’s pilgrimage to Mecca; upon return, he brought more Islamic influence with him • Askia also made special departments so that certain tasks = completed & they worked like modern government offices • Created standing professional army (1st in West Africa)
