  1. First Minister Calls For Action On South Side School Pest Problem It’s not often that matters of pest infestation reach the highest corridors of power in Scotland. However, following reports that primary schools on the South Side of Glasgow have dealt with multiple instances of bed bugs and cockroaches in the past few years, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has called for the local council to take action.

  2. According to sources primary schools in Govan, Govanhill, Pollokshields and Crosshill have been subject to numerous infestations, going back to 2015. It has been revealed there have been ten individual cases of cockroaches being found in school buildings since 2015, alongside seven complaints of bed bugs. Apparently, St Bride’s Primary School in Strathbungo, made up approximately 50% of the cases. Reportedly, pest control teams were called five times last year to clear up an infestation of bedbugs while teaching staff have faced a problem with cockroaches on three separate occasions since 2015. Several teachers have spoken of their concerns for their health and wellbeing, along with fears they may carry the pests back home from school.

  3. The situation has led to the Educational Institute of Scotland demanding more be done to deal with the infestation issue in schools on the South Side of Glasgow. However, the council maintain pest levels are decreasing in the district and that working staff are working alongside local parents to eradicate the problem.
