  1. The Common Wasp – Hero Or Villain? In the wake of the current wave of comic book movies, film fans have been flocking to the latest Marvel superhero caper `Ant-Man And The Wasp`. It is the follow up to the 2015 hit `Ant-Man` which saw likeable small-time crook Scott Lang, played by Paul Rudd, become the titular crime fighter with the power to shrink in size and hold power over ants. The sequel sees Scott team up with beautiful partner in crime fighting The Wasp, AKA Hope van Dyne played by Evangeline Lilly. It sees the wasp being a force for good and battling evil. But how much do you know about the common wasp you see buzzing around your home? Are they our friends like a Marvel heroine, or should we watch out for them, like a comic book villain? The common wasp, also known by its Latin name Vespula vulgaris, can be found all over the country, in various habitats. They can be just as much at home in urban areas as rural, woodland surroundings. Wasps can be identified by their eye-catching black and yellow warning stripes. There are thought to be in the region of 9,000 different species of wasp in the United Kingdom. Ranging from tiny parasitic wasps to 250 species of larger wasp with a stinger. There are also nine species of social wasps which build large nests. However, the most common wasp in Britain is the female adult worker wasp, measuring between 12 and 17mm, whereas the queen measures 20mm. Most people, when they think of wasps are wary of being stung. But they should be aware that a large proportion of wasps are solitary creatures which are harmless to humans. Their wasps are used for catching and immobilising their prey which they devour, including flies, spiders, aphids and caterpillars. This often makes wasps our friends, as they help with insect control. The world would be overrun without them. However, on the other hand, flying insects like fruit flies, bluebottles and wasps can be troublesome creatures in the spring, summer and autumn. They leave their droppings behind and possibly contaminate food, leading to illness. Wasps can be a recurring unwanted visitor to our home and garden. It may be something of a stretch to call them villainous, but, if you have an infestation, you may require the services of a highly trained pest control firm to get rid of them. You don’t have to call in a superhero to handle your pest control needs. Just contact one of Pest-Master’s experienced experts. We can take care of your wasps in a flash.
