  1. Dr. Monique Datta Promoting Critical Constructive Thinking With Double Entry Journals (DEJs) Vacca, R. T., Vacca, J. L., & Mraz, M. (2011). Content Area Reading: Literacy and Learning Across the Curriculum (Tenth Edition ed.) Pgs. 300-303

  2. DEJ’s… what are they and why should you use them?Literally they are Journals that students write in twice, but beyond that… DEJ’s are a means for students to document ideas that are related. DEJ’s are applicable in any content area, (i.e. Math, History, Social Studies, PE, Science, etc. etc.) DEJ’s can help students put their thoughts side by side based off a prompt that you you provide them.

  3. When considering DEJs, students may ask, “You want us to do what? I don’t even want to write once..” Show them what you mean.

  4. Here’s what a DEJ looks like? A single sheet of paper split down the middle, with the questions you provide students at the top on the left and right side, e.g… What is Point of View? POV is the way a writer tells a story. What does Point of View mean to you? POV is like first person, and second person or third person and it helps create a kind of voice that the author needs to make their story mean something to me as a reader. Sometimes the author uses different point of views or different characters to tell the story.

  5. …and for History DEJ’s look like this. Why did Japanese American’s get placed in Internment camps in 1942? Be specific. The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the American Government didn’t think that other Japanese American’s were loyal. This attack made the American’s join the war, although it had started a long time ago. How would you feel if you were a loyal Japanese American during this time. Being put into a concentration camp would make me hate America at times and love it as well. I would want to prove my loyalty and my family’s loyalty and would try to get out by offering to work as a translator or ask to join the military so that I could fight. I would also feel sad because if I went to war, I would be killing Japanese people and also killing a part of my background.

  6. Getting Students to write DEJ’s Introduce the concept of DEJ’s to students. Show students how to setup their DEJ. Ask students to play the role of teacher and provide a question that requires a definition and another that generates feelings about the definition. Model for students by writing down the meaning of the definition and what it means to you. Provide students with a prompt that is similar and have them begin.

  7. How to Assess students critical and constructive thinking Get students into groups Get students to share what they wrote for the definition Discuss as a class the definition and guide students to correct answers, without telling them answers but by having them deduce from research Get students to discuss second question.
