  1. The Battle of Long Island (The Battle of Brooklyn Heights) By: Danielle Erickson and Serena Kong

  2. The Battle of Long Island • Where: Long Island, New York • When: August 27, 1776

  3. Generals • British Army: General William Howe • Continental Army (Patriots): George Washington

  4. Who won and Why? • Winner: The British • Howe’s army traveled to Long Island in hopes of capturing New York City and to gain control of the Hudson River. • Washington had sent 3 men to guard 3 main roads so the British could not invade.

  5. Who won and Why? Cont. • 1 road called, Jamaica Pass (in Brooklyn), was left unguarded, where the British invaded. This is the start to The Battle of Brooklyn Heights. • 2 of Washington’s men were attacked by the British troops. • The British confronted the Continental Army’s forces at Jamaica Pass, and then outmaneuvered the entire Continental Army. • The Battle of Brooklyn Heights can be seen at the conclusion to The Battle of Long Island.

  6. Results • The British suffered a mere 400 casualties. • The Continental Army, who suffered 1,000 casualties more than double what the British suffered.

  7. Importance • One of the earlier battles of the Revolutionary War. • This was the first battle after the creation of the Declaration of Independence. • Interesting that the British wanted to repair ties with the Colonists… • Morale decreased for the Continental Army, yet this showed how strong Washington was because he led the army to win the Revolutionary War despite a setback like this.

  8. Fun Facts! • General William Howe’s brother Admiral Vincent Howe also participated in the battle. • Of the attacked men 1 was captured and the other was able to flee. • General Howe ordered the fighting to end so his men could dig trenches around the American enemy. General Washington ordered his men to leave Long Island. Secretly, around 9,000 Continentals rowed back to Manhattan with fog in the sky on August 29, 1776. Apparently, George Washington was the last man to leave Brooklyn!

  9. Fun Facts! Cont. • On July 9, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was read in New York in front of Washington and his men. Angry, a group of soldiers and citizens went to Bowling Green (a park in Manhattan) where a statue of King George III on horseback was located. The people tore down the statue and melted it to make musket balls. There were 42, 088 bullets that were made to use in the Revolutionary War for independence.
