  4. OUR HERO FROM THE PAST Count Széchenyi, the Greatest Hungarian Count István Széchenyi, who lived two hundred years ago in the 19th century, is the Greatest Hungarian, we say many times. And why? Because this man did a lot for the Hungarian people as a politician, as a writer and also as a private person. As the members of Hungarian minority, many people in our country also thank him for the many changes he reached.

  5. The most important thing he did, was his volunteer deed when he offered his one year income as a private person to form the Hungarian Scientific Academy. Its Hungarian name is „Magyar Tudományos Akadémia”. The other innovations he did were:

  6. „Lánchíd“- was the first  bridge which connected the two parts of Budapest, Buda and Pest. It is the symbol of Budapest. In the second World War it was bombed down but in the next few years it was rebuilt again.

  7. As a politician he also organized sailing and the transport of goods on the river Danube which is the second largest river in Europe.

  8. Our students completed the questionnaire of volunteering. We were surprised how much do they know about it.

  9. Questionnaire for young Volunteers There are more and more people who decides to do voluntary work in the European Union. The voluntary work has its role in the development of tolerance and solidarity among people and what´s more it helps us to make our neighborhood and our wider surroundings better and nicer. The common definition of being a volunteer is that it´s somebody who does something useful or nice to other people from his free will and without any financial or other compensation. Sometimes it needs only some time to spend somewhere or with somebody but it´s a good feeling to give even if it´s only our time. With the help of the next few questions you can learn a bit more about being a volunteer and about yourselves.

  10. Test: • When you do some voluntary work, you do it because: • you like to do something unselfish • you like to spend time with other people • you want to feel useful • you feel responsible for the peole in need • you enjoy the activity • you can make contacts for possible employment • Rank in order the top three reasons.

  11. What do you think who can be a volunteer?it´s important what religion do you have your age is importantyour positive relation to other people is importantyou must be trained in a profession • What features should a volunteer have, what do you think? • patient • sympathizing • greedy for money • nervous • good-looking • calm

  12. What kind of help is more important, what do you think? • financial • psychical • help with some work • all three • What work would you like to do? • to clean up after a natural disaster • to work on a beach – cleanup • to teach in poor schools • to save animals • to work as a clown in hospitals to make children laugh • to help with old people in care centres

  13. What do you think is the hardest thing for a volunteer? • to change one´s time into the time for strange people • to not show the sorry one feels many times for people in need • to know what to do as a volunteer • volunteer work is not very interesting • What does a volunteer earn? • money • respect • favours

  14. What does the voluntary work give to someone? • Mark the three most important things for you: • reduces negative feelings, eg. guilt • gives positive feelings • makes one feel important • when volunteering , I feel less lonely • volunteering increase my self-esteem • it makes me a better person • Everyone has some unused skills they don´t use in their everyday life. • What are your unused skills? • Name a few: • _____________________

  15. Do people in your surroundings do voluntary work sometimes? Mark the right answer. • my parents • my friends • my neighbours • my teachers „Evaluation“ As you can see voluntary work is something complex , it includes many things. But the most important thing is, that there are two sides of it: on one side there are some situations when we have to renounce something on the behalf of someone else. On the other side we also get a very valuable thing, a feeling that we were useful, we helped someone in need. So, anytime, when you feel that you are needed somewhere or by someone don´t hasitate but go and do good. You won´t regret it.
