  1. Lincoln Park UBF Membership Class #6 Giving “But since you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in the love we have kindled in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving” (2 Corinthians 8:7).

  2. Why give? Because God gives to us • Everything (1 Chronicles 29:14) • Life (Job 1:21) • Ability to produce wealth (Deuteronomy 8:18) • Talents (Exodus 31:6) • Wisdom (Daniel 1:17) • His promises (1 Kings 8:56)

  3. Why give? Because God gives to us • He gave us his only Son (John 3:16) • He gives us the Holy Spirit (Luke 11:13) • He gives us the right to be his children (John 1:12) • He gives us justification by his grace (Romans 3:24) • He gives us eternal life (John 10:24; Romans 6:23) • He gives us spiritual leaders (Ephesians 4:11-12) • He gives us his ministry and gifts (2 Corinthians 5:18; 1 Peter 4:10)

  4. Why give? Because of the grace of Jesus • Generosity in giving shows the grace of God in our lives (2 Corinthians 8:1-5) • The Macedonians gave even though they were poor • They gave themselves “first to the Lord”—their giving was actually a commitment to him • We should aim to “excel in this grace of giving” (2 Corinthians 8:7)

  5. Why give? Because of the grace of Jesus • We give in response to knowing the grace of Jesus (2 Corinthians 8:9) • Jesus was the eternal Son of God in heaven, but he came to this world humbly, as a baby in a manger (Luke 2:7) and lived with no place to lay his head (Luke 9:58) • Ultimately, Jesus poured out his life unto death (Isaiah 53:12) and gave his life as a ransom for us (Mark 10:45); he gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God (Ephesians 5:2) • He held nothing back and gave his entire being to God and to us, even though we were so sinful

  6. Why give? Because of the grace of Jesus • Luke 7:36-47—The woman gave her treasure to Jesus in response to the great forgiveness she received from Jesus • Likewise, when we truly appreciate the grace of Jesus, we want to give to him our best—whatever we have, including our possessions, money • Acts 4:32-37—Giving in the fellowship was a response to Jesus’ grace, & out of love for needy members • 1 John 3:16-18—out of the genuine love of Christ

  7. How to give • Eagerly and willingly (2 Corinthians 8:3-4,11; 9:2) • According to our means (2 Corinthians 8:11-12) • Generously (2 Corinthians 8:2; 9:5-6,11) • Cheerfully (2 Corinthians 9:7) • So that there may be equality among God’s people (2 Corinthians 8:13-15) • Not calculating but depending on God to provide for us (2 Corinthians 9:8-11) • Before God, by faith (Matthew 6:1-4; Romans 14:23b; Hebrews 11:4)

  8. Why give? • To show that our faith is authentic and to encourage God’s people (2 Corinthians 9:12-15) • To honor the Lord himself and show our eagerness to help the needy among God’s people (2 Corinthians 8:19) • To support a gospel worker/missionary: (1 Corinthians 9:7-14; Philippians 4:10-20) • To help the weak and to be blessed by God (Acts 20:35)

  9. Why tithe? • Tithing supports those who serve the Lord full time (Numbers 18:21) [Those who serve full time should also tithe (Numbers 18:26)] • To support foreigners, the fatherless and widows (Deuteronomy 14:29; 26:12) • To trust and honor God and experience his blessings (Malachi 3:8-12) • Jesus warned about tithing but skipping other things (Luke 11:42)—we should do both

  10. Various kinds of offerings • Tithe (from gross income—”the whole tithe”—Malachi 3:8-10) • Thanksgiving (for specific things God does in our lives—blessed by a Bible study, message or conference; a new job, marriage, birth of a child, God’s work in someone’s life) • Special (for fundraising for missionaries’ needs, for travel expenses, for building projects, for victims of disaster, for members in financial crisis) • Christmas (usually used for charitable/relief work) • Sunday offering (to give something to God each week)—Exodus 23:15b; 34:20b; Deuteronomy 16:16b
