  1. ApprenticeshipsThe Why and the How! Andrew Hooper, Newbury College Alan Gwyer, Basingstoke College of Technology

  2. The debate! “I’ve got quite a few people doing NVQs through Train to Gain – why would I change to Apprenticeships?” “Because with an Apprenticeship you get a knowledge based technical certificate and a far more able colleague as a result.”

  3. The debate! “But Train to Gain is all done in the Workplace – Apprentices have to go off-site for their technical certificates.” “Not anymore – technical certificates can often be delivered in the workplace and they provide opportunities for peer-to-peer support”

  4. The debate! “But some of my Train to Gain learners get workshops anyway – what’s the difference?” “An additional qualification and far greater depth of knowledge and understanding of the field they’re working in.”

  5. The debate! “Apprenticeships take a long time to complete – 2 years isn’t it?” “Far from it – some Apprenticeships delivered in workshops at the workplace can be completed in as little as 6 months.”

  6. The debate! “But Apprenticeships only start in September – my Train to Gain learners can start any time.” “Far from it – most Apprenticeships can start several times a year these days – in some cases, anytime.”
