  1. Mrs. Raniere’s Class is Reaching for the Stars Welcome to Second Grade Frey Elementary School 2012-2013!

About the Teacher *Moved to Georgia from Rhinebeck, NY in 1989 *Graduated from KSU in 1993 *Married to Paul with two daughters (Marisa & Isabella (“Bella”) *Taught 1st grade for 1 year, 3rd grade for 9 years, and this is my 5th year teaching 2nd grade *Loves teaching, reading, coffee, and going to the movies

  3. Morning Arrival *The 1st bell rings at 7:15 & the 2nd bell rings at 7:50. *Tardy passes are given to students arriving after 7:50. *When students arrive, they should: unpack their binder, get two sharpened pencils, use the restroom, & begin morning work. *Morning Announcements begin at 7:50. *Morning Work will be checked at 8:00. *Please limit tardies whenever possible.

  4. Reading Workshop *CAFÉ and Daily 5 strategies used during Reading Workshop *Reading instruction will occur as a whole group, in guided reading groups, & individually. *We will use Words Their Way word sorts and Evan Moore spelling lists for our word study program.

  5. Writer's Workshop *Mini-Lesson, Independent Practice, Teacher Conference, Author’s Chair *Narrative, Informational (Explanatory), Persuasive (Opinion Pieces), Research, & Response to Literature *Writing Journals and Folders *Integrated with Science and Social Studies (whenever possible) *Mini-Offices as reference tool

  6. Science *Integrated into Reading & Writing Workshops (whenever possible) *Matter, Energy, Forces & Motion, Celestial Bodies, Life Cycles *Science Experiments,logs, and journals

  7. Social Studies *Integrated into Reading & Writing Blocks (whenever possible) *Regions & Rivers of Georgia, Creek and Cherokee, Civil Rights, Forms of Government, Economics

  8. Math Workshop *Fact Fluency (timed tests) *Mini-lesson-Problem Solving/Math Journals *Math Rotations—Technology, Independent practice, Math facts, Extra Practice, Review with Teacher

  9. Recess Weather permitting, we will have a daily recess time from 11:00 to 11:20. In case of inclement weather, we will have indoor recess during which time we may watch a video, play a game, or have free drawing time. Our class could always use donations of playground equipment throughout the year such as balls, jump ropes, bubbles, sidewalk chalk, soft frisbees, bases or small cones. Thank you in advance for your support!

  10. Specials *The students will rotate through four special areas: PE, Art, Music, & Technology. *A monthly specials calendar will be sent home at the beginning of each month in your child’s binder so that you may dress your child accordingly. *Only tennis shoes should be worn on PE days for safety purposes. *Our specials time is 11:20-12:00.

  11. Lunch *Our lunch time is 12:18-12:48. *Feel free to join us for lunch anytime after the first two weeks of school. Please meet us on the bench outside the doors of the cafeteria. *Please remember that outside food should not be brought in to your child. *Lunch prices and menus can be found on the Frey Cafeteria Blog (Prices have changed from last year)

  12. Homework *Homework will come home nightly Monday-Thursday. *Homework will usually consist of Math and Language Arts activities. *Completed homework is due the following school day unless otherwise noted on the homework. *Homework will be a review of concepts learned in class. *Always keep homework in the homework section of your child’s binder. Homework is your child’s responsibility. *Homework should ALWAYS be neat, complete, & have your child’s name on it!

  13. Afternoon Dismissal *We will Stack and Pack from 1:50-2:00. *Students will perform their afternoon duties. *Afternoon announcements begin at 2:05. *Daycare, buses, and ASP will be dismissed at 2:10. *Car riders will be dismissed at 2:20. *Please call or fax any changes in afternoon transportation to the office prior to 1:30.
