  1. PBS TeacherLine at WSIU Graduate Assistant Quarterly Update Created by Dorrie Williams

  2. Peer Connection Pilot • January 2008 • During the first week of January I participated in the Peer Connection Pilot. The 7 day session allowed PBS TeacherLine coaches to test out the new Peer Connection program. Coaches participated in an ice breaker discussion and networked with each other.

  3. Peer Connection Pilot Characteristics of Adult Learners The article “Characteristics of Adult Learners” listed the following as key concepts to consider when working with adult learners. • Self-Concept • Experience • Readiness to learn • Orientation to learning • Motivation to learn

  4. Peer Connection Pilot • The article “Characteristics of Adult Learning” provided quality information that all PBS TeacherLine coaches can refer to when they are marketing PBS TeacherLine courses to educators. • Participants in the PBS TeacherLine Peer Connection pilot provided feedback regarding the article. The ungraded assignment gave coaches a chance to get their feet wet with the new PBS TeacherLine Peer Connection product.

  5. Peer Connection Pilot High-Quality Professional Development The second article in the Peer Connection Pilot “High Quality Professional Development,” promoted the fact that professional development within a community setting can be just as effective online as it can be in a classroom setting. The article outlined the eleven standards of professional development as outlined by the National Staff Development Council.

  6. Peer Connection Pilot The article emphasized that with the combination of face-to-face interaction and online interaction with your teachers , coaches will find success and will be able to facilitate the development of community practice. The Peer Connection Pilot provided coaches with a great opportunity to test out the new Peer Connection software. Peer Connection is a great learning tool for educators who wish to communicate with each other.

  7. Raising Readers Course • In February of 2008, PBS TeacherLine launched a new course titled “Raising Readers.” “Raising Readers” is a course that focuses on early childhood literacy. • At WSIU, we reached out to a select group of early childhood educators and invited them to participate in the course. We offered the educators full scholarships and they were able to take the course at no charge.

  8. Raising Readers Course I previewed the “Raising Readers” course and summarized it for my colleagues. The “Raising Readers” course combines course discussions with interactive activities to enhance the learning process. Between the discussions, activities, and interactive videos, the “Raising Readers” course is a positive online learning experience. It’s a great course for early childhood educators who wish to increase their knowledge of early childhood literacy methods.

  9. PBS TeacherLine Facilitator Training Dorrie Williams, WSIU PBS TeacherLine Graduate Assistant, participated in the February-March session of the PBS TeacherLine Facilitator Training Program!

  10. What this means • This means that here at WSIU we will have our very own PBS TeacherLine Facilitator. I will be facilitating PBS TeacherLine courses when the opportunity arises. • The six week training program was very extensive. I learned a great deal about teaching online courses using the PBS TeacherLine interface. I look forward to teaching PBS TeacherLine courses and positively representing WSIU!

  11. Closing The Gap Conference • On April 4th, I presented at the Closing The Gap Conference at John A. Logan. The title of the conference was Enhancing Your Skills With PBS TeacherLine. • The session was well attended. We had the opportunity to promote PBS TeacherLine to twelve area educators during the 50 minute session.

  12. Continued Plans for the Spring We have big plans for PBS TeacherLine this spring at WSIU.

  13. WSIU PBS TeacherLine Website • Our biggest project for the spring is working on the PBS TeacherLine website for our station. We are working hard gathering content and images and hope to launch our station PBS TeacherLine website sometime this spring.

  14. Continued Outreach • During the spring we will continue our outreach initiative and continuing spreading the word about PBS TeacherLine to area educators. We also hope to give away our Peer Connection subscriptions to educators that we select for that highly recommended learning experience.
