Bay of Pigs Invasion • Pro-Soviet Cuban leader Fidel Castro takes over in 1959 • CIA trained anti-Castro exiles prepare for invasion of Cuba • April 1961 – 1, 500 invaders are crushed by Castro forces, complete disaster.

Cuban Missile Crisis – October 1962 • U-2 spy planes reveal photos of Soviet missiles in Cuba • JFK decides to set up a naval quarantine(blockade)of Cuba to stop the flow of missile parts • Soviets ships turn around at the last minute to avoid confrontation • Soviets agree to remove missiles if U.S. pledges not to invade Cuba.
