  1. Film Festival Site Competitive Analysis Presented by Kelly Miyashiro and Akiko Sakamoto “Miyamoto”

  2. Overview • Client and User Needs • Branding and Design • Site Architecture and Navigation • Functionality • Content

  3. Client and User Needs Overview • Client Needs • User Needs

  4. Client Needs • Create a strong artistic and attractive identity for “Film Power!” (UCSD's Internation Film Festival) via a strong website • Create a presence in the industry and among artists • Increase awareness of “Film Power!” in UCSD and the local community

  5. User Needs

  6. Brand/Design Overview • Graphics • Layout • Fonts • Color Schemes

  7. Branding - Graphics

  8. Branding - Graphics Very clean and boxy. Size of images work.

  9. Branding - Graphics Good branding image, but otherwise too much text and messy.

  10. Branding - Graphics Weak use of space, looks empty Size of image good, works for this site.

  11. Branding - Graphics Horrible, graphics say nothing about what the festival is about. Ok in that this conveys it's a traveling festival

  12. Branding - Logos Strong fonts and use of color Rather weak and unnoticeable

  13. Design - Layout

  14. Design – Best Two Layouts Secondary navigation is on the left which is more natural. Content in the middle is less messy, easier to read.

  15. Fonts Tribecha Film Festival Titles: Bold, Sans Serif, All Caps Body:Verdana, Arial, Sans Serif <-Decent NW Film Center Titles: Bold, Sans Serif, Mixed Caps Body:Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, Sans Serif <-Good Seattle Film Festival Titles: Thin and tall, Sans Serif, Mixed Caps Body: Trebucht MS, Arial, Helvetica, Sans Serif <-Good Resfest Titles: Bold, Sans Serif, either All Caps or All Lowercase Body:Futura, Sans Serif, Sans <-Bad

  16. Colors Most sites use orange, white, and graytones. Feels ok, but not very striking and not a lot of energy.

  24. Navigation - Secondary Not clear what these are Good: Has title above with good spacing, Bad: Uses jargon/confusing terms in the links Secondary navigation also standard and clean, usually on a side.

  25. Navigation - Context Secondary navigation is done well, clean, simple. Could be called out more Very messy, but well done considering the amount of locations they have to cover

  26. Navigation - Context Much cleaner and obvious. Fits the theme. Secondary navigation is on the left, obvious, and well spaced Link names don't really make sense though.

  27. Navigation - Context Nothing special, could be bigger but works well

  28. Functionality Overview • Table Of Functions • Functions In Context of Site

  29. Functionality - Table

  30. Functionality - Seattle -Film and event schedule sidebar. -Fits a lot of functionality into a small space, but a bit messy and confusing. -SIFF uses it because it has hundreds of films to sort through.

  31. Functionality – Buy Tickets Very nice schedule with many options on how to sort/view Ability to buy on both the schedule and the film info page.

  32. Functionality – Buy Tickets Bad:NWFilm doesn't let you buy tickets online, it just lists the prices.

  33. Content Overview • Content Table • Schedule Comparison • Film Info Comparison

  34. Content - Table

  35. Content - Schedule Nice table layout with the ability to buy tickets right next to the film. Simple list format, not as clear. Mysterious two character combinations after the times, presumably indicating the theater.

  36. Content – Film Info (Basic) Very attractive and readable, but too much text can irritate a user. Not to mention, this description gives a lot of the film away. Otherwise, gives us basic information: Title, Director, Synopsis, Filmography, Showtimes, and a picture. This is the film length, but it doesn't explicitly make that clear and could be confusing.

  37. Content – Film Info (Good) More detailed information is tucked into deeper layers if the user is interested. User not only gets the schedule and price, but the option to buy a ticket right there. Cuts down on the words and delivers the essential info at the top.
