  3. Current Status: MEMORIAL UNION • Deferred maintenance issues • Many original systems from 1928 are in need of replacement (electrical, plumbing, etc.) No central AC • Life safety issues • Sprinklers and fire alarm systems either non-existent or antiquated • Lack of wheelchair accessibility • Lack of adequate space • Art storage below water table in the basement • Inadequate employee workspace

  4. Proposed Changes: MEMORIAL UNION • New heating, air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, fire safety and technology upgrades throughout • A new accessible entrance on Langdon Street and installation of additional elevators/ramps • Theater Wing Expansion • Expanded Hoofers lakefront presence • New student study lounge & event space • Expanded upper level terrace • New employee workspace including locker rooms, breakroom, etc.

  5. Current Status: UNION SOUTH • Students indicate they feel the building is cold, sterile, uninviting and it is therefore underutilized • Campus-wide surveys, focus groups, and open forums • Too small to meet the growing demand • 1300 RSO requests denied on an annual basis • Structure is not suited for expansion • Renovation required will rival the cost of new construction • Wisconsin Institute for Discovery opens across the street in 2009 bringing thousands of new students, faculty and staff to this area of campus

  6. Proposed Changes: NEW south campus Union • New employee workspace-includes locker rooms, breakrooms, etc. • Sustainable “green” building – UW Madison’s first • 1st of Big Ten and 1st of UW system • An urban center that provides entertainment, recreation and food • A true home for SOAR • Large event space—dances, etc. • Pedestrian, bicycle, & light-rail friendly • Lounge space with a skyline view of downtown Madison • Preserving State jobs and catering to STUDENTS’ interests and needs
