  1. Informative/explanatory writing Success criteria: I can understand the purpose of informative/explanatory writing.

  2. Definition of informative/explanatory writing • Informative/explanatory writing presents reasons, explanations, or steps of a process

  3. Informative/explanatory writing • What IS informative/explanatory writing? • Uses facts, statistics, or evidence to present reasons, explanations, or steps of a process • It just gives the audience information so they can learn about a topic—the goal is to give them knowledge • Strictly informational • The writer thinks like a teacher • What informative/explanatory writing is not… • Does not use a viewpoint to convince the audience the writer is correct. It just uses information to help achieve the writer’s purpose • It is NOT Emotional • The writer DOES NOT think like a salesman (PERSUASIVE WRITING). THIS IS NOT INFORMING AND EXPLAINING!

  4. Examples of what informative/explanatory writing is and is not • THESE ARE CORRECT EXAMPLES OF Informative/explanatory writing • “A new solar panel has been developed that can power an entire city for days and is less expensive than traditional fuel.” • “some college students enjoy living on campus because it is convenient.” • “thousands of automobile deaths each year aren’t just ‘random’; rather, they occur because drivers and passengers didn’t take the time to ‘click’ it.” • These are incorrect examples of informative/explanatory writing • “solar power is the best form of power because it is clean, cost effective, and sustainable. • “living on campus is more enjoyable than living off campus because it is convenient.” • “remember, don’t be a statistic. Take the time to fasten your seat belt every time you get in the car. And make sure you ask your passengers to buckle up as well.”
