  1. How Poker become the most favorite iGaming sports today? Poker game is known as the most popular and played games in casinos. There are some major events which are There are huge international events like the European Poker Tour and the World Series of Poker that attract tens of thousands of entrants, and many more people who follow along or play at home. In the first half of the 20th century, things were very different. Poker was seldom found in casinos, particularly those in Las Vegas. Instead, variations of blackjack were the most popular card games of choice, which is a variation of foundational games like twenty-one and pontoon. Online poker is still doing well according to the figures recently reported. None more so than Paddy Power, Betfair and Poker Stars owner Flutter Entertainment who claim a 35% year-on-year increase for the first half of this year. Global sport might have been shut down for a while but that didn’t many keen sports bettors giving poker and casino gaming a try. So how did it become the hit that it is today? There are several factors. Introduction of Poker to the United States Poker is a game that has several possible origins, all of them located in Europe, and some with very similar names. These are: poque from France, poca from Ireland, brag from the UK, primero from either Spain or Italy, and brelan from France.

  2. While poque and poca have names that are more closely related, brag’s rules resemble poker the most. They game has antes and lasts until only two players are left, and has a heavy focus on bluffing, a strategy widely used in games of poker. One of these European games was exported to the United States in the first half of the 19th century. From here, it spread throughout the southern United States, leading to the development of new game variations, including stud poker, new hands, and community cards and lowball. Around the turn of the 20th century, the game of Texas hold’em, the most popular variant of poker today, was first played. Tournaments From the early 20th century onward, Las Vegas became the global gaming capital, with casinos popping up right along the now-famous strip. As these developed into the integrated resorts that we know today, Texas hold’em was introduced to the city. The game was first played in the California Club in 1963, with other major casinos at the time, like the Golden Nugget, Dunes and Stardust, all offering the game a few years later. The first World Series of Poker was held in 1970 at Binion’s Horseshoe, and quickly became one of the most important tournaments in the sport. It has been held every year since, with several other major tournaments replicating and adapting its format. Online Casinos The poker boom was also driven by the increased availability of poker and other casino games online. These websites, which began operating from the mid-1990s, allowed player’s access to these games from wherever they were in the world, reaching far more people than had previously been possible. Despite poker’s growth, variations of blackjack continue to be popular online casino games. You’ll find that most operators have a variety of different online blackjack games available on their websites, with varying rules, limits, and quantity of decks. Some casinos will also offer pontoon, a British game that shares many similarities. Poker is so popular, that online poker sites tend to run separately to casinos, specializing in just cash and tournament poker games. Poker Boom These tournaments were one of the factors that fuelled the poker boom in the 2000s. Chris Money maker won the 2003 Main Event of the World Series of Poker after qualifying online. This saw a huge surge in players enter the competition the following year, all hoping to replicate his success. This happened around the same

  3. time that TV stations began to televise the games with the cards face-up, which proved entertaining enough to pull in the viewers. TV and Streaming There are TV shows dedicated to poker games and tournaments, while streaming services like Twitch show online games and live events. Many of the tournaments, like the European Poker Tour and World Series of Poker, are also broadcast on TV via services like PokerGO and traditional sports broadcasters like ESPN. The poker boom was an accelerated version of this, created partly by the excitement of Chris Moneymaker’s win and the increased accessibility of online poker. And although the boom has fizzled out, poker remains a popular option among players in online and land-based casinos. Convenience In its prime, online poker players had to sit down in front of a computer to play. Many may have forgotten, but in the 2000s, laptops were far rarer than they are now, and desktop computers were the norm. These were expensive, heavy machines that tied you down to your desk. Nowadays, thanks to the invention of the smartphone, affordable internet, and free Wi-Fi hotspots, you can play poker at any time, from anywhere. The top sites provide dedicated apps that offer a seamless gaming experience from any mobile device. Those not familiar with the industry may not know that these digital rooms are not legal everywhere. In the US, only a handful of states permit them, and countries such as Australia outright ban them. Though most European countries are laxer when it comes to online gambling. In recent years, there has been some push back against social poker. Asia is a massive market, and it came as a shock when, in 2018, China placed a ban on play money poker apps. A move that insiders claim is catastrophic for the industry in the region. Many fear that this trend may spread all over Asia, as well as the Arab world. Gambling is mostly illegal in these regions, and many perceive social poker as a gateway into that world. Conclusion Nevada-based online operator WSOP has reported recent visitor numbers over 45 per cent higher than during its yearly peak during its live tournaments, which itself is two or three times higher than its background traffic number throughout the year, according to the company’s vice president of communications Seth Palasky. The trend is also seen elsewhere, with the Italian Poker Stars website seeing around 5,000 players at the virtual tables during the shutdown, which is about double the level of regular traffic the site receives. And the pattern is similar elsewhere across Europe and around the globe.

  4. Online casino operators have responded to the increased interest in their offerings by adding more events and tournaments, with record prize-money on the line. Leading card-room PokerStars said the prize pool of over $18m for the $215 buy-in Sunday Million tournament at the end of March was the biggest in the company’s history with nearly 61,000 players and 93,016 entries, and one of the biggest tournaments ever for any casino online. Global interest in online poker had been on a gradual but noticeable decline for the last five years, but the coronavirus pandemic has generated a new peak in visitor numbers for a wide array of online casino operators alongside other online activities such as video streaming and gaming. After years of gradually improving the streaming quality of the films and television shows available on its platform, last month Netflix took the unprecedented step of reducing the majority of streams down to standard definition in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, India, and a number of other territories in order to reduce the impact on each country’s internet infrastructure as more people than ever look for entertainment online. Once again, in layman’s terms, playing poker online is entertaining simply because it gives players the feel of playing in an actual poker table due to its live environment. But in a way where they will view it on their computer or phone screen, while sitting (or even laying down) in the comfort of their own home. This fact alone can be a sole reason why online poker is booming in this time, where everyone has nothing else to do but to stay safe to preserve each and everyone’s lives for the greater good.
