MMS Committee on Geriatric Medicine Established 1980 The mission of the Committee on Geriatric Medicine is to provide advice and counsel to the Society and its leadership related to geriatric health, specifically to include psycho-social issues unique to the geriatric population, the physiology of aging especially with regard to disease prevention and health enhancement, education of the health care community in all issues pertaining to elders, health care policy as it applies to elders and all aspects of long-term care specifically for the geriatric population, including palliative care; to act as liaison with organizations working in these areas; and to address any other issues that may come before the committee pertaining to the quality of life of elders.

  4. MMS Committee on Geriatric Medicine Committee membership is comprised of physician members knowledgeable and experienced in elder and/or palliative care. A resident physician, two medical students, and two representatives from the MMS Alliance are also active participants. Together, through regular meetings and electronic communications, they provide a collective wealth of expertise and remain informed of medical, legislative, and other issues pertaining to geriatric medicine and palliative care.   5. MMS Committee on Geriatric Medicine FY 2018 – 2019 Goals and Activities: 1. Be a resource for the Society and the public and provide advice on ways to increase the Society’s visibility on those issues pertaining to the health and well-being of elders. Provide expertise on geriatric issues to Society leadership, other committees, and departments. Assist the Society’s liaison efforts with outside organizations on geriatric programs and activities. Identify and develop resources pertaining to the health and well-being of elders for distribution to the membership and the public via various media.

  6. MMS Committee on Geriatric Medicine FY 2018 – 2019 Goals and Activities: 2. Advocate for education on various aspects of end-of-life and palliative care, which meets the continuing medical education needs of physicians and other health care professionals. Identify educational needs, venue, media, and faculty on end-of-life care, including communication, appropriate planning, and resources for providers of direct patient care. Assist in notifying physicians and other health care professionals about end-of-life and palliative care resources, programs, communications, and other educational activities pertinent to patients and their families.

  7. MMS Committee on Geriatric Medicine FY 2018 – 2019 Goals and Activities: 3. Provide advice and counsel to the Society and its leadership on regulatory and legislative matters and Society policy pertaining to the health and well-being of elders, including, but not limited to: protective services, guardianship, health care proxy, long-term care, home care, impaired driving, pharmacy benefits, capitated health care models, and assisted living. Invite representatives from regulatory groups to address the committee as appropriate. Provide testimony and other assistance on legislation relating to geriatric medicine as required. Review Society policy and proposed regulations and legislation and make recommendations as appropriate.

  8. MMS Committee on Geriatric Medicine FY 2018 – 2019 Goals and Activities: 4. Promote the principles and practice of geriatrics in hospital settings and across the continuum of care. Raise awareness of the needs of the geriatric population within hospitals and other care settings, including support of hospitalists and the multidisciplinary team.

  9. MMS Committee on Geriatric Medicine FY 2018 – 2019 Goals and Activities: 5. Educate students and physicians in training about the specific needs of the geriatric population. Assist in publicizing programs such as the Summer Institute in Geriatric Medicine and the Chief Resident Immersion Training Program in Geriatrics. Promote the field of geriatrics.

MMS Committee on Geriatric Medicine Among the Society’s Strategic Priorities for 2017 – 2020 Sustainable Health Care Delivery: Play a leadership role in developing a sustainable model of health care delivery by promoting the integration of public health, behavioral health, and the social determinants of health across physician practices. Involve physicians and patients in end-of-life and aging patient care issues.

MMS Committee on Geriatric Medicine Selected Work: Older/Impaired Driving Active participant on the Massachusetts State Highway Safety Planning Older Driver Emphasis Area team in 2015 and 2017 Oversight of “Medical Issues” track during the June 2015 Older Driver Safety Summit held at UMass Boston Gerontology Institute Invited speakers to address issues of ensuring public and individual safety while working to preserve the mobility and independence of older adults Represented MMS at recent impaired driving panel with MA EOPSS and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

MMS Committee on Geriatric Medicine Selected Work: Palliative Care Lead committee representing the MMS on the Massachusetts Coalition for Serious Illness Care Jointly sponsored a webinar on “Palliative Care: Aligning the Team Around the Patient” with Honoring Choices Massachusetts, the American Cancer Society, the Hospice and Palliative Care Federation of Massachusetts, Lahey Health, developed in collaboration with the MA Department of Public Health and the MA Comprehensive Cancer Prevention and Control Network, and the Northeast & MetroWest Palliative Care Coalition. Advocate for proper use of the MOLST form throughout the Commonwealth, as well as moving toward the National POLST Paradigm.

MMS Committee on Geriatric Medicine Selected Work: Advance Care Planning Adopted a range of internal policies and directives on advance care planning, palliative care, and the physician-patient relationship. Developed and disseminate “Planning Ahead: What Are Your Choices?”, a concise brochure to facilitate important yet difficult conversations about planning health care goals between patients, their families and health care providers. Available in the English, Spanish, and Portuguese languages. Produced a video that discusses the steps of advance care planning, such as completion of health care proxy forms and medical orders for life-sustaining treatment.

MMS Committee on Geriatric Medicine Selected Work: Opioid Management in the Older Patient Advocated that nursing facility doctors and other prescribers should be exempt from consulting the Massachusetts Prescription Awareness Tool (Mass PAT) Developed a physician fact sheet on pain management and opioid prescribing for older adults in nursing homes, long term care facilities, and in the community

MMS Committee on Geriatric Medicine Selected Work: Falls Prevention Developed a webinar on the CDC’s STEADI initiative in partnership with the MA Department of Public Health and the Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts when it was first rolled out Developed a brochure for patients and their families on falls prevention as part of the Society’s Healthy Aging series. In preliminary discussion with MDPH and the Brain Injury Association of Massachusetts to develop a webinar on TBIs from falls.
