  1. What can you do to keep our learners safe? • Prevent the abuse and mistreatment of vulnerable adults • Promote increased awareness and recognition of the issues surrounding the abuse and mistreatment of vulnerable adults • Ensure that all staff working within MACLS understand their responsibility to protect vulnerable adults from harm whenever they are in a position to do so • Ensure that when abuse/mistreatment is suspected, appropriate action is taken to safeguard vulnerable adults from further harm and exploitation • Ensure that allegations about abuse/mistreatment are investigated thoroughly, efficiently and consistently • Respect the rights of all people to live their chosen lifestyle with privacy, dignity, independence, choice and fulfilment.

  2. THE 5 R’S OF SAFEGUARDING • RECOGNISE • RESPOND • REPORT • RECORD • REFER

  3. RECOGNISEThe ability to recognise behaviour that may indicate abuse

  4. RESPOND • Respond appropriately & promptly to any recognised indicators • Respond sensitively to the situation & person

  5. REPORT • Ensure report is forwarded to the appropriate person ie your Line Manager or designated Safeguarding Officer, or an appropriate agency

  6. RECORD • Record precisely & promptly what has been alleged, ensuring details are accurate & factual, • Do not ask questions & do not investigate • Complete Reporting Form & forward to appropriate manager • Do not record yours or others opinions as your report may be used as legal evidence

  7. REFER • The Safeguarding Officer will decide if referral is appropriate & to which agency referral is made

  8. What does this mean for MACLS’ Staff? • An effective Safeguarding Policy is one that provides clear direction to our staff & all those using our Service regarding expected codes of behaviour
