  2. Le verbe être au singulier 1. The verb to be in French is être. Study the following forms. ÊTRE suis je es tu est il elle est

  3. Le verbe être au singulier 2. You use je to talk about yourself. You use tu to address a friend. Je suis française. Tu es américain?

  4. Le verbe être au singulier You use il to talk about a boy or a man. You use elle to talk about a girl or a woman. Il est blond. Elle est brune.

  5. Le verbe être au singulier 3. You also use il/elle when referring to things. Le collège? Il est grand. L’école? Elle est petite.

  7. La négation To make a sentence negative in French, you put ne... pas around the verb. Note that ne becomes n’ before a vowel. Négatif Affirmatif Jenesuis pasfrançais. Je suis américain. Tun’es pastimide. Tu es amusant. Iln’estpaségoïste. Il est sociable. Ellen’est pasde Paris. Elle est de Lyon.

  8. La négation Make each sentence negative. 1. La fille est timide. Answer:La fille n’est pas timide. 2. Je suis la sœur de Georges. Answer:Je ne suis pas la sœur de Georges. 3. L’ami de mon frère est sociable. Answer:L’ami de mon frère n’est pas sociable. 4. Tu es élève dans l’école. Answer:Tu n’es pas élève dans l’école.
