  2. Domain registration and use (Mar 08, 2006) • 4,052 names registered • Net increase by 219 since October 2005 • 1,872customers • Net increase by 111 since October 2005 • New registrar Namesbeyond • 24/7 support • Staff in US and India

Study of the use of .aero names • Review of 220 randomly selected names (5% of total) • 60% resolve to web sites • 49% have active web sites with aviation content • 12% parked (26 names, mostly DomainBank.com) • Only 2 web sites with content without clear links to aviation • 17 active web sites for 3-letter airport codes

Registry migration to Afilias • Phase 1 completed on Feb 16 • All key registry systems operated/under responsibility of Afilias • registry database, who-is, DNS, registrar service • New functionality “Manage your .aero ID” on www.information.aero • Most web site content hosted by CORE • Phase 2 expected completion August 1, 2006 • “Pending-create” - request ID when registering name • Higher granularity of registration privileges and transparency for registrants • Ability to reconcile with industry coding systems • Full web site hosting

Registrant feedback concerning reserved names Since last DAC meeting in Oct. 2005, SITA has received the following inquiries concerning unsuccessful registrations: • 12 inquiries about registration of airport codes by non airports: ADV, GSE, ASN, GPA, LMS, MAL, UTA, NEA, RCF, RMC, AMA, TIK, AGS, ADA, JRA, BFS, AIR, NAS, ETS. • 1 request for registration of the 2-letter airline code AA.aero by a non-airline customer.

Policy development, requests for consultation • Implemented policy changes • Reservation of FAA airport codes implemented • Requests for consultation • 9/1 Principles for allocation of special purpose name spaces • 9/2 Future of sub-domains • 9/3 Policy for allocation and use of geographical names • 9/4 Changes to recreational aviation registrant group

Awareness building • First half of 2006 focuses on domain registrations, then gradual switch to development • Web and print advertising, direct communications • ACI & SITA homepage promotion of .aero free of charge. Awareness building (cont.) • Newsletter and customer communications • December 2006 –article about Internet governance in SITA newsletter • February 2006 - Issue 12 of .aero newsletter distributed to subscribers, posted also on .aero website (focus on registrations and usage of .aero, DNSSEC). • March – NEW .aero dedicated content segment in Solutions@sita • Next .aero newsletter expected in June (development & digital identifiers in ATI) • Press • December 2005 – SITA announces Afilias as the new .aero registry operator • December 2005 – SITA issued a press release in reference to the ICANN renewal proposal. • February 2006 – Afilias issued press release covering the successful migration.

  10. .aero Renewal proposal • Key requirements • Remove the obligation to ONLY use ICANN registrars • Maintain delegation of policy development rights • Call for more active role of ICANN regarding new TLD acceptance issue • Submitted to ICANN on December 16, 2006 • Deadline for objections against renewal Feb 6, 2006 • 2 registrars against removing the obligation to only use ICANN registrars • 1 individual objecting to renewal in principle • 1 individual calling for same pricing of all TLDs • All comments here: http://forum.icann.org/lists/aero-renewal/ • SITA formulating written response to objections raised • Expect negotiations to commence in May 2006

ICANN and Internet Governance Issues • New top level domains launched • .travel, .mobi, .cat, .jobs • Issues dominating ICANN agenda • Verisign settlement agreement • Internationalized domain names • Independent review of ICANN’s policy development body for gTLDs • DAC members encouraged to participate http://www.icann-gnsoreview.org/ • ICANN MoU with US DoC to end Sep 30, 2006 • Impact on .aero renewal ? • Issue of internationalized domain names can impact ATI • Risk of internet fragmentation • Travel and transportation relies heavily on universal internet access

Development update • DNS increasingly used for machine to machine communications • Security - DNSSEC • Provisionally included as a new chapter in ATA DSWG standards • SITA/ARINC propose ATA to organize workshop for aerospace and airlines • Routing of calls • ATI VX initiative to use .aero naming structure to allow voice calls to “type B” addresses • Next generation airline messaging (TypeX.aero) • Considerations include .aero naming as a part of directory service in type X messaging standards • RFID/Object Naming Service (ONS) for ATI • “Floated” idea of industry specific ONS in .aero • Initial informal feedback from IATA and AeroID positive • Interline ET • Very draft proposal for new H2H messaging and directory service based on .aero structure
