RECRUITMENT • Purpose of Volunteer and Guest Recruitment Committee • Develop a catalog of “Best Practices” for outreach and recruitment of new volunteers and give it the widest distribution possible • Monitor the effectiveness of the various methods and revise the catalog accordingly • Provide assistance where requested to implement the best practices

RECRUITMENT Oklahoma – Jim Key • Foundation = enthusiastic volunteers • Recruiting materials on Kairos website • Locally produced DVD with testimonies by volunteers, Kairos graduates and correctional officers • Key = working the interest cards • Kairos graduates’ participation at Methodist Conference

  5. RECRUITMENT South Carolina – Jerry Bode • Identify and engage key church individuals • Participation in church ministry fairs • Engage ex-offenders

  6. RECRUITMENT Indiana – Terry Crockett • Show the passion • Brand new volunteers = the most excited • ACOP training emphasis on the ad council • Brand awareness • Invite key DOC leaders

  9. RECRUITMENT Texas – Ed Davis • Educate AC and teams on whose responsibility recruitment of team members is • Engage 4th day community • Join Cursillo, Emmaus teams • Sponsor candidates • Attend closings and handout literature • Attend Ultreya/reunions-become speaker

RECRUITMENT Texas – Ed Davis • Recruitment is all about personal relationships • Go and see AA and Latino clergy. • Invite self to Ministerial Alliance meeting • Follow up generic invitation with one-on-one invitation • Invite Kairos grads to serve on the team • Recruitment is also about cost • Make sure no one priced out of participation • Team members with homes in the community invite other team members to stay with them

  11. RECRUITMENT Texas – Ed Davis • Schedule weekends over a national holiday or over school holiday so hourly workers do not lose pay • Labor day, New Years Day, President’s Day are a good examples

  12. RECRUITMENT Texas – Ed Davis • Publicity -Write stories for the local newspaper about Kairos weekend/Kairos method -Invite newspaper reporter to closing -Write annual newspaper piece on “Restorative Justice Week” (third week in October)

RECRUITMENT Texas – Ed Davis • Hold periodic “Celebrate Kairos Family Banquet” at a location central to multiple units • Schedule a “Homecoming Banquet” periodically in which previous and current team members are invited • Plan a periodic “Ex-mates Banquet” to honor Kairos grads and successful releases

  14. RECRUITMENT Texas – Ed Davis • Schmooze DOC officials including your warden and chaplain by holding “appreciation’ events • Hold a “Correctional Officer Appreciation Day” • Hold a Parole Officer Appreciation Day • (Combine some of these events) • Create an AC committee to do these things

  15. RECRUITMENT Georgia – Jim Miller/Kelvin Thompson • Smaller groups • Pastor interest • Segment our approach • Network in smaller communities • Include ex-offenders
