PLOT SUMMARY OF CHAPTER 8 • After raining for four days,her mother was passed away on the fifth day.She was buried next to Madhuri.InMadhuri’sroom,Azreen remember how they struggle to make basket that Azreen broke it.After leave the room,she saw someone at window.After chase the woman until the veranda,Madhuri’s room was burning.After extinguish fire,she went to bed.PuanFatihah met with woman who looks like Madhuri.She faint after saw her.MohdAsraf goes to the market to lookfor medicinal plants for his grangmother but fails to find any because the rain drowns all Pak Huzaimi’splants.Indesperation,he decides to go to the Old Lady’s house for help.The Old Lady hesitates at first but after much persuasion from Azreen and MohdAsraf,she finally agrees to go over to MohdAsraf’s house to help his grandmother.

THEMES • SUPERSTITIONS OR DELUSIONS • Belief in the supernatural is still prevalent in small villages. • People of the village seek help from bomohs or witchdoctors to cure sickness or for charms to get what they want. • “Was it a bad thing to want to win back her husband’s affections?  What was a little charm from the bomoh to push things in the right direction?” Pg. 148.

THEMES • FORGIVENESS • Forgiving is an act that can free a person from burden and achieve peace. • The Old Lady was abused and badly treated in her marriage, which drove her to kill his husband.  But in the end, she forgave him. • “Once you’ve forgiven – sincerely forgiven – the weight is lifted from your chest, and you’re finally free.” Pg. 161

  6. SETTING • Madhuri’s room • Azreenfinds Madhuri’s photos are all torn in three parts.Theroom is also burnt down. • The Old Lady’s House • Asraf meets the Old Lady to ask for help to cure his grandmother. • The Old Lady dies in a fire in this house.

  7. CHARACTER & CHARACTERISTICS • Mak • Azreen and Madhuri’s mother. • Wheelchair bound. • Loves her daughter. • In chapter 8,she was died and was buried next to Madhuri’s grave.

CHARACTER & CHARACTERISTICS • Saleh Abdullah • Azreen’s father. • He is tough,firm and strict with Azreen. • He also kill his adopted daughter Madhuri. • Fatimah • HajiGhani’s first wife. • She is very detest Madhuri. • Tries hard to win back HajiGhani’s love and approval. • She go to see the village bomoh to get some charms to win back her husband’s affection.

CHARACTER & CHARACTERISTICS • MohdAsraf • Azreen’sfriend,maybe her love interest. • Lives with his grandmother and loves her grandmother. • A responsible young man. • Love Madhuri,so hurt and disappointed when Madhuri married HajiGhani. • Asraf’s Grandmother • Asraf’s grandmother only living relative. • Loving. • Falls ill and died in the end.

  10. MORAL VALUES • Be courageousFor example,whenthe house catches fire Azreen bravely tries to rescue the Old Lady but she in turn has to be rescued by her father.
