  1. The Moon Chapter 27.2 Video – Apollo 11 Moon Landing (5:48 min)

  2. A. Lunar Surface - has an albedo of about 7% - far side (faces away from Earth) is heavily cratered. - near side (faces Earth) has large areas of maria(ancient lava flows). - composed of mostly silicates (similar to Earth) - explored by man during the Apollo missions in the 1960’s & 1970’s Video – Lunar Temperatures (3:11 min) Rilles Public Domain – www.nasa.gov Public Domain – www.nasa.gov

  4. B. Structure - Thin outer crust of varying thickness. - Partially molten lower mantle. - Solid iron core. • Tectonically dead due to lack of volcanoes and no significant magnetic field. • Minor Moonquakes have been detected. Image Source: Wikipedia

  5. C. Formation - Most astronomers accept the Impact Theory of formation of the Moon. - Collision of the Earth with a “Mars-sized” object is thought to have produced orbital material which coalesced to become the Moon. - This would explain the similarities in composition between the Earth and Moon.
