Strategic issues • UP is the only university offering BVSc in SA • Faculty of Veterinary Science at Onderstepoort is recognised as a national asset • We aim to have a student body reflecting national demographics • Transformation in this regard is expected of us • Procedures are being put into place to move towards this goal (CSC and Faculty programmes, boot camp, liaison with DAFF, priority selection)

Programme development • BSc (Veterinary Biology) I intake ceased in 2010 • BSc (Veterinary Biology) I applicants for 2010 switched to BSc (Biological Science) I • BSc (Veterinary Biology) II students of 2010 who are selected for BSc(Veterinary Biology) III will complete the degree in 2011 • BSc(Veterinary Biology) degree will terminate at the end of 2011 • Successful students will then continue in the current 4-year BVSc degree programme in 2012 • They should then qualify in 2015 • The 4-year BVSc degree programme will terminate at the end of 2015

Programme development • New 6-year BVSc degree programme will start in 2011 with BVSc I • Main intake will be from BSc (Biological Science) I of 2010 • No school leavers will be considered for 2011 except a small number in liaison with DAFF • Exemptions will be granted for subjects previously passed; new subjects to be completed, especially in second semester • First year to be offered on Hatfield campus; thereafter on Onderstepoort campus • First graduate class in 2016

Minimum entry requirements NSC with the following subjects and minimum performance levels: 2 languages of which 1 must be English, both at level 4 Mathematics at level 4 provided Physical Science is at level 5 Physical Science at level 4 provided Mathematics is at level 5 2 other subjects at level 4

  9. Minimum entry requirements • APS 30 • School leavers must also complete the NBT • We are considering the use of a specific proficiency/ psychometric test • We are considering the use of “added value” criteria • We are also considering the possibility of interviews

Selection criteria • Categories for 2011: • Completed BSc (BiolSci) I (2010) • Designated Group students in liaison with DAFF • Completed third semester of Extended programme students (2010 intake) – admitted to second semester • International students, especially those in UP programmes • Weighted academic average according to credit value of modules • Use of Health Sciences formula for school leavers

Selection criteria • Categories for 2012 • School leavers open category: 50% from 2010 cohort and 50% from 2011 cohort • School leavers Designated Group in liaison with DAFF • Completed first semester BSc (Biol Sci) open category • Completed third semester of Extended programme (2011 intake) – admitted to second semester • International students • Specific categories by arrangement

  12. Selection criteria • Categories for selection to BVSc II in 2012 • Successful BVSc I students • Graduate students open category • Graduate students designated group • Students seeking transfer from existing programmes • International students

  13. Admission • First year • 125 maximum (to allow for graduate category in second year) • Second year • 140 maximum

  14. Language of tuition • English • Students are entitled to receive and answer test and examination papers in Afrikaans by order of PANSALB

  15. Accommodation • BSc (VetBiol) III students in Huis Onderstepoort or private lodgings • Current BVSc I – IV students in Huis Onderstepoort or private lodgings • New BVSc I students in residences of Hatfield campus or private lodgings • New BVSc II – VI students in Huis Onderstepoort or private lodgings • Facilities currently being expanded for use in 2012

  21. Programme development • The qualification is still offered as a 2-year university diploma • Approval of the degree programme was turned down by the HEQC • Development of the degree programme is on hold pending discussions with the professions and consideration of various alternatives

  23. Minimum entry requirements • APS 22 • School leavers must also complete the NBT • We are considering the use of a specific proficiency/ psychometric test • We are considering the use of “added value” criteria • We are also considering the possibility of interviews

Selection criteria and admission • Categories for 2011: • School leavers – 27 places • Students in the process of completing a first year at university – 5 places • Students with one or more completed years at university – 8 places • Repeaters – 5 places • Foreign students – 3 places • APS and academic average. Use of Health Sciences formula being considered together with other criteria for school leavers

  25. Language of tuition • English • Students are entitled to receive and answer test and examination papers in Afrikaans by order of PANSALB

  26. Accommodation • Huis Onderstepoort or private lodgings from first year • Facilities currently being expanded for use in 2012
