  3. Literally- to observe, what we see? Artist David Hockney may be 74, but he hasn't lost his appetite for exploring new technology and techniques. His recent show featured huge landscapes created on his iPad and later worked with oils up to fill a whole wall.

  4. To celebrate- detail, colour, texture He started off painting on the iPhone, but the larger screen of the iPad gave him greater scope for artistic impression. Hockney uses a £2.99 app called Brushes to create quick landscape drawings which he later expands into enormous canvases.
