Notes: Atoms. Atoms are the smallest particles of an element. Every atom is made of three parts: Protons – Positive charge Neutrons – No charge (neutral) Electrons – Negative charge. Protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus of an atom and both have an atomic mass of 1

  1. Notes: Atoms

  2. Atoms are the smallest particles of an element. • Every atom is made of three parts: • Protons – Positive charge • Neutrons – No charge (neutral) • Electrons – Negative charge

  3. Protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus of an atom and both have an atomic mass of 1 • Electrons are found on shells outside the nucleus – they are very small

  4. Atomic number – the number of protons in the nucleus • Every atom of a particular element contains the same number of protons • Atomic mass – the number of protons plus the number of neutrons

  5. Dalton’s Atomic Theory • Atoms can’t be broken down into smaller pieces • In any element, all the atoms are exactly alike • Atoms of two of more elements can combine to form compounds

  6. Atoms of each element have a unique mass • The masses of the elements in a compound are always in constant ratio
