Listening • Hearing ="to perceive sound with the ear" • physical thing • automatic response • Listening = "to consider with thoughtful attention"  -listening is a cognitive response to what has been heard -voluntary action -all about choice Listening is one of the most important aspects of communication

  3. Think about this… Just because you have s doesn’t make you a LISTENER!

  4. Why We Listen • to obtain information • to understand • for enjoyment • to learn

  5. What Good Listeners Do 1. face the speaker 2. maintain eye contact 3. minimize external distractions (electronics, etc.) 4. respond appropriately (nod head, uh-huh, etc.) 5. focus SOLEY on the speaker (don’t be thinking of your response while the person is talking) 6. minimize internal distractions (your own thoughts) 7. engage yourself (paraphrase what was said, ask ?’s, etc.)

  6. A Helpful Strategy • SLANT is a strategy for listening/paying attention in class. By SLANT-ing, you show your teachers that you are being an active learner.SLANT stands for:Sit upLean forwardAsk questionsNod your headTake Notes &Talk to the Teacher

  7. What we remember… • We only remember 25-50% of what we hear; therefore, YOU need to make a conscious effort to hear not only the words being spoken, but to try and comprehend
