  1. Promise and Eternity Rings: A Complete Guide to Express Your love

  2. The Promise Ring • What are promise rings? The promise ring is given a symbol of commitment between two people. It shows that the relationship is serious to both parties. It is symbolic of two people declaring their love for each other but it is not quite an agreement to get married for which you would exchange an engagement ring. You can choose to have his and hers promise rings to make it extra special. • The promise ring or couples commitment rings will often have its own unique meaning for the couple who have exchanged it. This will be a personal declaration to each other. It could say that the couple intend to get engaged but it doesn’t have to be a precursor to getting engaged. Instead, it could simply mean that the couple plan to be exclusive with one another and be monogamous. It could also show love and commitment after having a child when the couple don’t intend to get married. What a beautiful sentiment – his and hers promise rings! • Promise rings can also be given between best friends and siblings to show their love and friendship for one another. It can show that they will always be there for each other.

  3. History of the Promise Ring • We know that the ancient Greeks used promise rings or betrothed rings to remember important people in their lives when they weren’t together. After, in the 1300s, the posy ring (also spelt poesie or poesy) was given. • These posy rings were named after the French word meaning poetry or poem and often were inscribed with poems or romantic phrases (see Wartski for examples and inscriptions). Engravings include phrases such as ‘Love Conquers All’ and ‘Unite our Hearts’. • In the 1970s, the promise ring was generally seen as a pre-engagement ring. But now the meaning has changed and is much more fluid and unique to the couple giving and receiving the rings. It simply shows devotion to each other! They could also be seen as couples’ commitment rings where people express their commitment to each other.

  4. How to Give a Promise Ring

  5. Giving a promise ring is an understated affair! There’s no need for cards, presents and parties! Just choose a special moment for you as a couple to enjoy giving and receiving the ring. It is probably best to have discussed the promise ring before you gift it to your partner as you don’t want her to mistakenly think that you’re proposing! That would be disastrous! • But, a promise ring can be the perfect gift for someone special for their birthday, Christmas present or even other traditions like Mother’s Day. Be sure to talk about the unique meaning that your emerald promise ring has for both parties. And again remember, that his and hers promise rings can be a beautiful gift for both of you.

  6. Eternity Rings – What’s the difference?

  7. Whereas a promise ring would come before a marriage, and particularly before an engagement ring, the eternity ring usually comes after the wedding set is given. But an eternity ring could still be given if you aren’t married or don’t intend to. In which case, you would use it in a similar way to the promise ring. • An eternity ring is given as a symbol of affection between two people and often eternity rings are a particular style of ring whereas a promise ring can come in a variety of different styles. The sentiment behind the eternity ring is often unity and everlasting companionship. • The eternity ring makes an ideal gift commemorating special events in your lives together. It can be given as a gift for special milestones for example wedding anniversaries, the birth of a child or a special birthday. And of course eternity rings for couples is a wonderful way to show both parties’ feelings for one another.

  8. Styles of Eternity Band • The eternity ring is usually a band set with a number of small gemstones either half set, three quarter set or full set. They are usually a slim band to allow the finger to accommodate more than one ring on it. Ladies would end up with a wedding engagement and eternity ring on their ring fingers. • A half set eternity ring has gemstones or diamonds set half way around the band • The three quarter set eternity ring has stones set three quarters of the way around the band • Half set and three quarter set eternity rings can be resized should you need to • A full eternity ring has stones set continuously around the full band. Choose this for a ring that glistens at every angle. But, this ring cannot be resized unfortunately. • See below our Serenity Half Band Diamond Eternity Ring and our Serenity Pave Full Set Eternity Ring

  9. One Final Choice – Which Precious Metal • Once you’ve chosen your style and gemstones, you have one more important decision to make. Which metal will you choose? Your wedding engagement and eternity rings will often match their metals, but this isn’t always essential. • Yellow gold is more traditional and has been popular throughout history. It is a lovely warm metal as is rose gold. White gold and platinum have the same ice white feel to them but platinum is more durable and a more luxury metal. It is the rarest of all and has a brilliant white sheen and high lustre. White gold is more affordable than platinum but will have the same colour and sheen. White gold is rhodium plated and will need plating fairly regularly to keep the colour and sheen.
