Cost of Malware • In 2011 the cost of Cybercrime exceeded the cost of the world-wide drug trade • $114 Billion in lost money, $274 billion in time spent combating Cybercrime • $2.3 billion lost in the US alone • In 2010, 8.6 million US households experienced identify theft (7% of all households)

  4. Prevention • Anti-Virus • Actively scans incoming threats • Cannot detect/prevent all infections • Both free and paid products • Anti-Spyware • “On Demand” scanning • Cannot detect/prevent all infections • Both free and paid products

  5. “Human” Prevention • Smart Surfing • Avoid interactive Ads, toolbars, “search helpers” • “Free” software often isn’t • Just because you can find it doesn’t mean it’s safe • Avoid Phishing scams • http://www.sonicwall.com/furl/phishing/index.php • Never click email links or supply any personal information via email

  6. Social Engineering • A tactic focused on exploiting the weakest link in cyber security: human error • Bits of information give away much more than you think • http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2012/09/cosmo-the-god-who-fell-to-earth/all/ • http://kotaku.com/5948617/confessions-of-a-teenage-xbox-hacker
