  1. Bell Ringer: Wednesday, Nov 30 • You NEED your book today! • Put your “Self-Reliance” homework on your desk. • Copy the word for today: • Endeavor (v): to attempt by putting in a lot of effort • Starting this hour, you will endeavor to live without technology and distractions for 24 hours! I will endeavor to do the same. • THEN…you underlined 2 aphorisms of Emerson’s in your homework. In your bell ringer, explain why you picked those. How did they speak to you? OR – let’s go out on a technological bang here - #tag your answers (probably 2 tweets – aphorism, then reason) to #MsPAmLit.

  2. “Self-Reliance” • What’d you think? • We’ll share summaries first… • THEN we’ll answer the stars. • THEN we’ll talk about aphorisms.

  3. Living Simply… • What would life be like without the HUGE distraction of technology? • Thoreau explored this in his big experiment on Walden pond. • YOU will explore this for the next 24 hours. • No cell phone • No computer • No iPod/MP3 • No TV • No unnecessary distractions! • In an emergency, you can make an exception • As you live the experience, REFLECT. Is this easy? Hard? What’s good about “living simply” and limiting your distractions? What’s not so good? • Earnestly endeavor to go completely technology free. Open your mind!

  4. The Oath… “I solemnly swear to Emerson and Thoreau that I will endeavor in earnest to live simply and deliberately for the next 24 hours.”

  5. TURN IT OFF! • Cell phones off! • Projector off!
