  2. The Facts • You need selenium to live • But too much selenium, and you get selenosis • When you get selenosis, your breath will smell like garlic • When your breath smells like garlic, people may think you’re trying to scare away a vampire • When people think you are trying to scare away a vampire, they may peg you as a Twilight fan • Don’t be pegged as a Twilight fan • Watch your selenium intake!

  3. What is selenium?

  4. Natural Form • The most common form in selenium supplements

  5. How much do you need? RDA 55mcg/day Upper limit (UL) 400mcg/ day. National Instututes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements. Selenium – Dietary Fact Sheet. http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Selenium-HealthProfessional/ (accessed March, 2, 2014).

  6. Supplements 20 % Of Americans take a supplement containing Selenium • Selenium deficiency • Treating Crohn’s disease • Reducing the risk of some cancers • Reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease • Reducing the risk of prostate cancer Why? Common in: Men’s Multivitamins

  7. Selenium is Converted to Selenoproteins in the Body • More than 25 selenoproteins are known • Selenoproteins are active in • Reproduction • Thyroid hormone metabolism • DNA synthesis • Protection from damage and infection • Few pathways are understood National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements. Selenium – Dietary Fact Sheet. http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/Selenium-HealthProfessional/ (accessed March, 2, 2014).

  8. Mechanism of Incorporation

  9. Please use with CAUTION!

  10. WARNING! • Individuals taking medicine for lowering cholesterol, niacin, sedative medications and warfarin should also exercise caution because of potential interference. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Toxicity Profile for Selenium. http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov/toxprofiles/tp92.pdf (accessed March 1, 2014),

  11. Characterization • 1H-NMR spectra • Absorption maxima by UV-VIS • Stretching vibrations from IR spectra • HPLC showing the separation of different forms of selenium

  17. So… where do I find selenium? • Jar of Dirt Video?

  18. Natural Processing

  19. Organic Form Production Methionine is transformed to the organic form of Seleniumby replacing a sulfur atom with a selenium atom. When in the organic form, selenium is regularly absorbed by soil and easily digested. Christensen, K. Selenium – the Essential Trace Mineral. http://www.goatbiology.com/selenium.html (Accessed on March 2, 2014).

  20. Supplement Processing Cultured in Sodium Selenite When cultured, the inorganic forms only make up 1% of the product. The rest of the product can be made into supplements.
