  2. For instance, one writing tip that you will encounter in a PTE review center is learning about how to use absolute phrases in the writing test. Absolute Phrases An absolute phrase modifies an independent clause and is made up of a noun and a participle with an optional direct object or a pronoun. It is set off by a comma and can also be removed from the sentence without changing the meaning of the sentence. To guide you more, below are the two functions of an absolute phrase: 1. An absolute phrase explains a “cause for” or a “condition of” something in a sentence. Meg awed everyone with her natural singing ability, her voice floating over the crowd. 2. An absolute phrase also adds specific details in the sentence and narrows the reader’s focus. His knife in hand, the unhinged man threatened to slit the young girl’s throat. Placement of Absolute Phrases An absolute phrase can be placed in different positions in a sentence. Check these examples:  An absolute phrase at the beginning of a sentence Reviewing in a PTE review center, the students learned various study tips and test-taking strategies.  An absolute phrase in the middle of a sentence Peter, heart pounding, ran as fast as he can to escape from the policemen.  An absolute phrase at the end of a sentence The family enjoyed the carrot cake, their fingers scraping the leftover frosting from the plates. Converting an Absolute Phrase into a Complete Sentence When converting absolute phrases into complete sentences, you must change the verb and add a conjunction to form a compound sentence. Absolute Phrase:A dark shadow appearing from behind the tree, Stewie and his brother screamed and ran away. Complete Sentences:A dark shadow appeared from behind the tree, so Stewie and his brother screamed and ran away.
