  3. Introduction Obesity is a crisis that many people are facing. We all know that losing weight can help us be healthier, and most people have an understanding of what causes excess weight gain in the first place. Many of us go on diets or exercise routines at some points in our lives to stay healthy, but never in our wildest dreams would we have given a second thought to our toothpaste. Your mornings are incomplete without brushing your teeth (hopefully), but has it ever occurred to you to question how the chemicals in our toothpaste affect our bodies. Yes, you may have evaluated your toothpaste on its merits of dental care and flavour, but hey, never for weight gain, right? Here are four reasons you may want to check out your toothpaste label a little more closely. Get rid of your toothpaste if it includes any of these: Disclaimer: These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. 4. #1 Fluoride Fluoride is a problem here because it can poison the enzymes that enable your body to make active thyroid hormones within your cells (1). If you have been using toothpaste with high fluoride for a long time, you might want to pay attention. Excessive and long term intake of fluoride can be a significant risk factor for the development of thyroid dysfunction. The ingestion of fluoride may lead to toxicity, so using fluoride-free toothpaste is best. (2) Disclaimer: These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. 5. #2 Triclosan This should sound familiar. In 2016, the FDA banned the use of triclosan, a potentially harmful antibacterial and antifungal agent in soaps and hand sanitizers, but deemed it safe to still be used in some kinds of toothpaste. (3) Though it is still used in toothpaste and mouth rinses, triclosan may have a significant effect on your Body Mass Index (BMI). (4) It is known to disrupt the endocrine system, and once that is disrupted you can become prone to being overweight (5). It can also disrupt thyroid function, testosterone and estrogen regulation. (6) There are several other reasons, but this should be enough for you to throw away the toothpaste tube that says Triclosan! 6. #3 Parabens Parabens (short for p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters) are preservatives that are used in shampoos, lotions, cosmetics, and many other personal care products. (7) However, consuming parabens through toothpaste can post different health risks. Why? Because as per a study, parabens can mimic estrogen, and they’ve been observed to promote the development of fat cells in human tissue. (8) So, check your labels for the long and short phrasing of this ingredient. Disclaimer: These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. 7. #4 Artificial Sweeteners Long before the concept of Artificial Intelligence existed, we were using artificial sweeteners. The only difference is that AI is a villain only in Hollywood movies (so far), but artificial sugar is your enemy in everyday real life. Saccharin is a petroleum-based sugar substitute. Saccharin is commonly used in diet foods, soft drinks, lip balms, and you guessed it, toothpaste. It is 350 times sweeter than cane sugar. (9) That means there’s just more empty calories for your body to potentially absorb through something you thought was harmless. 8. Your answer to artificial sweeteners should be a NO! So, the next time you have to replace your tube of toothpaste, look for these ingredients.
