  1. Presents IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum 2003

  2. Video middleware developmentVideoconferencing services and development in higher education and research networks Presented by Egon Verharen SURFnet Egon.Verharen@surfnet.nl GDS: 0031302305367 Vidmid-vc, ViDe.Net, ViDe, Internet2 Commons

  3. ViDe - Video Development Initiative • ViDe: Latin. to see.A collaboration of individuals in research and education focused on the development and deployment of standards-based network video. • Multiple Working Groups and Projects: • Video On Demand • Meta Data • Archiving of Digital Media • MPEG4 • Network Analysis • Video Teleconferencing • VC Cookbook • Microsoft SIP • Data Collaboration • ViDeNet • Numerical Address Space Mgt (NASM) IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  4. What Is ViDeNet ? • A test-bed for exploring issues associated with the creation of the global integrated video/voice over IP environment • An interconnected network of h.323 zones • A community of users sharing information video to every person on Earth ... IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  5. ViDeNet Zones • International • Universities • Educational institutes • Research institutes • Research and Educational Networks • Companies • Public Zone 100+ Zones ! Thousands of endpoints And counting IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  6. Global Dialing Scheme • Principles • International, but Freedom of choice for local situation • E.164/tel.no. integration • Implemented by present gatekeeper technology • Compatible with existing network (ViDeNet) • Governed by ViDe’s Numerical Address Space Management (NASM) working group • Proposal • by SURFnet, UKERNA, HEAnet, UNC • Implemented by ViDeNet, Internet2 and NREN services • Numeric[<EZ>]<world gk> <cc.> <org. ><client no>[<suffix>]00 ITU cc local no.s • Alphanumeric<userID>@<fully qualified domain name> IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  7. 541 GDS IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  8. Annual Connection Fees $ 0.00 IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  9. Internet2 • Universities wanted to recreate development cycle of Internet. Commodity Internet not meeting their needs. • US-based member organization with 180+ universities, plus corporate members and international peer networks. • International Research and Education Peer Networks • NRENs, e.g. SURFnet in The Netherlands • Advanced IP networks in the world IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  10. Internet2 Video • The Internet2 Commons • Operational Service for IP Video to Internet2 Schools and Communities • Bridges H.323, SIP, VRVS, Voice, Data, streaming video • Training • Megaconference (now no.5) • Cost recovery model • Voice Over IP Working Group • SIP / h.323 deployment issues • Video Middleware (VidMid) • What the heck is video middleware ??? IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  11. VidMid-vc • Video Middleware • Essential ‘glue’ for connecting video networking protocols to institutional infrastructure • Needed in federated administration model“crossing institutional boundaries” • Issues • Authentication & Authorization • Resource Discovery • Directory Services • Ensure common approach for H.323 / SIP IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  12. Goal for Video middleware • Room for improvement. Today’s VC apps: • No resource discovery – need to already know address of gatekeeper/proxy, target, gateway • Non-existent or unreliable authentication (who is calling?) • No authorization (all users have same access) • No security (eavesdropping) • Develop Middleware Strategies and Prototype Working Code for • FEDERATED (No Root Authority; multiple policy) • SECURE (Authenticated Users; Ability to apply Usage policies; no eavesdropping) • VIDEOCONFERENCING (H.323 and SIP) Services IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  13. Authentication & Authorization • Inter-realm authentication is critical because • Most applications are inter-realm • ‘Guest’ account hosting doesn’t scale • Integrate into campus security environments • Kerberos • Radius • PKI • Shibboleth IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  14. Resource Discovery • How do I find people and endpoints? • How do I find MCUs and gateways? • Do I discover or ‘register’ resources? IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  15. Directory Services • Directories emerged as a key element of VC services • E.g. in ViDeNet • White Pages function is critical • Directory as canonical data source is essential for large scale enterprise deployments • Can’t afford separate organizational unit to manage video ‘accounts’ • Rely on existing HR data management IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  16. H.LDAP • Goal: Standardized Directory Services for multiple video/voice protocols • ITU sg16 commObject  H.350  H.LDAP • Inter-institutional searching • Implemented via web or endpoints • Supported by gatekeepers for EP lookup • Available in ViDeNet now • Being deployed across Internet2 IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  17. ViDe.Net • National Science Foundation Grant No. 0222710 • Partners: • University of Alabama at Birmingham, Clarement Graduate University, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, SURFnet, RADVISION • Goals • H.LDAP • specification of VC security requirements and implement the security specification in SIP- and H.323-clients • Testbed • Video Middleware Cookbook IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  18. H.LDAP Structure Enterprise Directory commObject Directory commOwner commUniqueID commPrivate h323Identity h323IdentityGKDomain h323Identityh323-ID h323IdentitydialedDigits h323Identityemail-ID h323IdentityURL-ID h323Identitytransport-ID h323IdentitypartyNumber h323IdentitymobileUIM h323IdentityUid h323IdentityPassword h323IdentityCertificate h323IdentityEndpointType generic super-class inetOrgPerson/EduPerson name address telephone email organization organizational unit commURI RFC 1274 userPassword Protocol-specific h323Identity SIPIdentitywork on VRVS AccessGrid MPEG … Add one attribute to your enterprise directory IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  19. DIR DIR DIR DIR GK GK GK GK H.LDAP In Action • Find any user anywhere ! • Create value added portals Directory Portal e.g. ViDeNet IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland

  20. What Can You Do ? • Join ViDeNet • Interoperability testing • Share in discussions • Support H.LDAP • Support H.323 URL • Endpoints read commObject directories • Gatekeepers reference commObject directories • Support standardization efforts • Implement H.235 • Annex D, E IMTC/Wainhouse Research European Forum – May 2003 – Geneva, Switzerland
