1. Scripture Reading Matthew 3:1-10
2. Obeying the Gospel Involves REPENTING
5. Repentance Is Essential Foundational to preaching. . .One cannot preach the gospel without preaching repentance!
Matthew 3:1-10 In the preaching of John
Luke 13:1-5 In the ministry of Jesus
Luke 24:46-47 In introducing the gospel
Acts 2:36-38 In first gospel sermon
Acts 3:13-19 In further gospel preaching
Acts 26:19-20 In teaching King Agrippa
Demanded of all who obey God
Acts 17:30-31 “…all men every where…”
6. Repentance Is Not... Just being terrified by consequences of sin
Felix did not repent though terrified by recognition of his sins and judgment(Acts 24:25)
Just acknowledgement of sin
Judas did not repent though he admitted his sin (Matt. 27:3-5)
Just a change of conduct
Mob ceased beating Paul, but they did not repent (Acts 21:32)
None of these actions by itself constitutes Biblical repentance (Some will “quit” a sinful practice for other reasons than God and conscience - Alcohol, drugs, lying, stealing, cheating… etc)(Some will “quit” a sinful practice for other reasons than God and conscience - Alcohol, drugs, lying, stealing, cheating… etc)
7. Repentance Involves: Involves a change of mind, but not just:
Intellectual - such is faith (Heb. 11:6)
Relationship – occurs in baptism (Gal. 3:26f)
Emotional - that is reaction to guilt of sin, “Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned was remorseful. . .” (Matt. 27:3)
9. Repentance Is a Change of Mind Accompanied by an Amended Life for the Better Repentance of prodigal son (Lk. 15:11-21)
Previous a “Give me” life (v. 12)
Altered to a “Make me” life (v. 19)
See also Luke 3:7-14
10. Parable of Two Sons (Matt. 21:28-32)
11. Parable of Two Sons (Matt. 21:28-32)
13. Repentance & 2 Corinthians 7 Godly sorrow precedes repentance
due to recognition of sin against God
Causes “diligence”
Causes “clearing”
Causes “indignation”
Causes “fear”
Causes “vehement desire”
Causes “zeal”
Causes “vindication”
14. Being Led To Repentance Sin:
Grieves God (Gen. 6:5, 6; Matt. 23:37)
“Goodness of God” leads to repentance
Romans 2:4; 5:6-8
When we truly repent, we:
Never recall past sins with longing or joy
Never think lightly of the penalty paid for sin
Do not despise the messenger(s) who exposed and rebuke the sin we were in, “Am I therefore become your enemy, because I tell you the truth?” (Gal. 4:16)
15. You Will Repent If... You recognize sin in your life
You are brought to godly sorrow
You come to hate the sin that’s identified & desire to turn away from it
You change from a will directed by self to the will commanded by God
You are ready to do the works which are worthy of repentance
Will you repent & obey now?
