  1. Tertiary Transition School Library Tool Kit

  2. Universities and polytechnics say students are failing at tertiary level because they lack information literacy skills.

  3. What do Tertiary providers say:

  4. What students need To achieve at tertiary education students need to: • Know how to do effective internet and database searches • Know how to construct knowledge from information • Get to know the library at their tertiary institution http://loex2008collaborate.pbworks.com/w/page/18686701/The%20CRAP%20Test

  5. What do Tertiary providers say

  6. Senga White Senga White has posted work on this subject. In her school library she has organised lessons on tertiary transition which you can use with your students. http://www.slideshare.net/SengaW/sbhs-tertiary-prep-tutorials-2014-1

  7. WE CAN HELP STUDENTS ACHIEVE

  8. The C.R.A.P. Test The CRAP test is a way to evaluate a source based on the following criteria: Currency, Reliability, Authority and Purpose/Point of View.  Below are some questions to help you think about how to measure each of the criteria.      * Currency -           o How recent is the information?           o How recently has the website been updated?           o Is it current enough for your topic?     * Reliability -           o What kind of information is included in the resource?           o Is content of the resource primarily opinion?  Is is balanced?           o Does the creator provide references or sources for data or quotations?     * Authority -           o Who is the creator or author?           o What are the credentials?           o Who is the published or sponsor?           o Are they reputable?           o What is the publisher's interest (if any) in this information?           o Are there advertisements on the website?     * Purpose/Point of View -           o Is this fact or opinion?           o Is it biased?           o Is the creator/author trying to sell you something?

  9. EPIC databases A suite of several databases used by schools. Tertiary institutions have similar packages of databases . http://www.tki.org.nz/epic2 http://connect.massey.ac.nz/searchstrategies/ [Show the library pages of other tertiary websites]

  10. Searching a database To use a database to its full extent: • Click on Full text • Click on View all or Expand • Look at all the different formats listed • Look at everything on the sidebars • Click on external links that may be on the page

  11. Note taking Tertiary institutions often have note taking lessons on their websites. Could choose Dot and jot, Cornell notetaking or Massey University and show the students how to take notes from it http://esolonline.tki.org.nz/ESOL-Online/Teacher-needs/Pedagogy/ESOL-teaching-strategies/Oral-language/Teaching-approaches-and-strategies/Writing/Note-taking http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WtW9IyE04OQ Cornell note taking video http://owll.massey.ac.nz/study-skills/note-taking-methods.php

  12. Plagiarism Plagiarism is theft of someone else’s words / work. Not only is it unethical but YOU WILL GET CAUGHT. Tertiary institutions have plagiarism software that checks students’ work. DO NOT COPY AND PASTE – it is lazy and fraudulent.

  13. Bibliographies Why we need bibliographies Different formats Different formats for different tertiary departments Bibme.org / Endnote – software that will put your references into a consistent, acceptable form

  14. Site visits Take students on visits to the libraries of the different institutions, looking at the websites first. Spend a session evaluating the students what they have learned and what they would like more help with.

  15. What’s in it for you? • Registration By developing and delivering a session involving information literacy skills and ICT you could meet the requirements of BOK 3 Information needs and designs or BOK 4 Information Access Process. • Evidence-based Practise These sessions could provide further evidence of how your library contributes to student learning outcomes i.e. curriculum key competencies: using language symbols and text and managing self. • Performance Appraisal You get to show your appraiser how relevant you are to the school.s
