  1. IT is About The Mission Randy Humphries Jr. Chief Information Officer NASA Glenn Research Center

  2. Outline • What is IT • Deliver the Infrastructure • Enable the Mission • Enhance the Work Experience • Maintain Secure Useable Systems

  3. What is IT • Today IT is the infrastructure upon which we work, develop and operate the missions • computers, SW, apps, networks, tablets, phones, handhelds, special test equipment, -- all form the basis from which the aerospace industry works • our coworkers use IT as the primary means of facilitating and communicating work • Understand the mission and how it gets accomplished and then Make IT and you work for the Mission. IT /IS exist only to support the Mission!

  4. Deliver the Infrastructure • Computers • Software • Smart Devices • Collaboration Tools • Telephones • Networks • Databases & Websites Become connected to your mission partners

  5. Enable The Mission • Scientific and Engineering applications • Unique servers, computers and data sharing needs • Specialized Collaboration needs • Special Security considerations • Make the IT/IS specialist part of the project team Create Communications links to understand customer needs/experiences

  6. Enhance The Work Experience • Hardware and Software that make work-life easier • Work Process Automation • process and procedures • Development of specialized applications that enhance or streamline mission work/execution • Grow with the devices • Smartphone's and handhelds • Telework • Video calling • Virtualization • Rapid process to evaluate and integrate new applications Co-Create work-enhancing IT Products and Services with you Partners

  7. Secure Systems • The most secure thing we can do: • Keep our employees off the internet, prevent the infusion of outside drives and prevent data sharing • IT Security is an ‘operational’ discipline • Take responsibility for IT operations as well as IT Security • Assure secure systems without undue or unreasonable work impediments • Understand and manage the risk • Ask • How will it affect workflow? • Will specialized science and engineering applications be affected? • Whose risk is this? Manage Risks through Collaboration

  8. Summary • Fundamentally change our approach! • The Mission is the job! • An organization that is about enabling and supporting the mission through IT/IS • Become One NASA • They should know us and we should know them Connect, Communicate, Co-create & Collaborate
