  1. CODATA Strategic Initiatives, 2006-2012 Robert S. ChenCODATA Secretary GeneralDirector, CIESIN

  2. New CODATA Mission Statement The mission of CODATA is to strengthen international science for the benefit of society by promoting improved scientific and technical data management and use. Adopted 25th CODATA General Assembly, Beijing, October 2006

  3. CODATA Strategic Plan Recommended by ICSU in its Priority Area Assessment on Data and Information (2005) and the ICSU Strategic Plan (2006) Draft reviewed by 25th CODATA General Assembly and key initiatives and actions approved Final plan to be reviewed by the CODATA Executive Committee in March 2007 and sent to the membership for approval

  4. Approved Cross-Cutting Initiatives 1. Global Information Commons for Science Initiative (GICSI) • Launched by CODATA at WSIS in November 2005 • Primary focus is on scientific data, in coordination with other open access information initiatives • Close collaboration with the Science Commons • Main purpose: how can we jumpstart the creation of a sustainable global data and information commons? • Envisioned as a network of nodes aimed at creating critical mass of open access initiatives and data • Funding initiatives under way with NSF, EU

  5. Approved Cross-Cutting Initiatives 2. Scientific Data across the Digital Divide Program (SD3) • Follows ICSU recommendation to address digital divide issue; ties in with ICSU strategic initiatives/interests • Builds on linkages with GEOSS, IPY, eGY, UN GAID, GRIP, etc. • Builds on CODATA Task Groups (e.g., Archiving, Biodiversity, Disasters); CODATA-ICSTI Portal prototype • Link with WSIS e-science initiative and follow-up led by UNESCO

  6. Approved Cross-Cutting Initiatives 3. Advanced Data Methods and Information technologies for Research and Education (ADMIRE) • Provides state-of-the-art technology focus • Builds on past TG activities and collaborative projects and larger research community interested in data mining and integration • Positions CODATA with respect to new e-science/cyberinfrastructure initiatives and programs • Potential EU funding, industry partnerships

  7. CODATA Task Groups 2006-08 • Access to Biological Collection Data • Anthropometric Data 7 Engineering • Comprehensive Information System on National Disaster Mitigation • Data Sources in Asian & Oceanic Countries • Data Sources for Sustainable Development in SADC Countries • Exchangeable Materials Data Representation • Fundamental Constants • Gas Hydrates • Global Species Data Networks • Polar Year Data Policy and Management • Preservation of & Access to S&T Data in DevelopingCountries

  8. CODATA and theGEO Data Policy Task • GEO 2006 Work Plan, Task DA-06-01 (continuing in GEO 2007-09 Work Plan) • Furthering the practical application of the agreed GEOSS data sharing principles • CODATA is now the lead on this task, working with the GEO Secretariat • White paper to be developed • CODATA represented on TG preparing Declaration for next GEO Ministerial in South Africa (thanks to OGC and ICSU) • Declaration to include data policy component

  9. CODATA and the International Polar Year • CODATA IPY Task Group approved--same membership as IPY Data Committee • Met in conjunction with CODATA 2006 • Three IPY Sessions at CODATA 2006 • CODATA should be able to provide longer-term framework for IPY data activities beyond 2007-08

  10. CODATA and theelectronic Geophysical Year • CODATA endorsed the eGY at its 24th GA • Five eGY organized sessions at CODATA 2006 • C. Barton participated as an observer (and vote counter!) in 25th GA • CODATA community participating in various eGY activities

  11. CODATA and theUNESCO E-Science Follow-Up • Consultation held in Beijing in October 2006, organized by UNESCO with CODATA support • Two of five elements: • Promote the long-term systematic and efficient collection, dissemination and preservation of essential scientific digital data, for example, population and meteorological data in all countries. • Promote principles and metadata standards to facilitate cooperation and effective use of collected scientific information and data as appropriate to conduct scientific research. • Follow-on meeting in Geneva at end of March

  12. CODATA and theGlobal Risk Identification Program • New program of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) aimed at improving global, regional, and national disaster risk assessment and management • Coordination with the ProVention Consortium, International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), the World Bank, etc. • CODATA expecting to have a role in scientific peer review and science community input into risk assessment process beginning in 2007

  13. Developing content for 9 thematic areas initially: Climate Conservation Hazards Health Population Poverty Sustainability Treaties Integrates data, maps, news, publications, links, etc. Links to other global data centers & networks World Data Center Portal in development: Focus on Global Data

  14. Gridded Population of the World, Version 3 (GPW) Global Rural-Urban Mapping Project (GRUMP) collection Projected Population Distribution, 2015 Population, Landscape, And Climate Estimates (PLACE) Ramsar Wetlands Data Gateway Low-Elevation Coastal Zone dataset Human Footprint/Last of the Wild Environmental Sustainability Index (ESI) & Environmental Performance Index (EPI) Environmental Treaties & Resource Indicators (ENTRI) Global Distribution of Poverty Global Geographical Distribution of Vulnerability to Climate Change Special Report on Emission Scenarios (SRES) data Global Natural Disaster Hotspots New Global Soil Classification System Proposed: New Global Roads Database Key CIESIN Global Environmental & Socioeconomic Datasets

  15. Map client now in beta testing Implements Web Map Context (WMC) specification from OGC SEDAC Map Client in Beta

  16. Geoinformatics for Geochemistry (GfG) http://www.geoinfogeochem.org/

  17. Collaboration with Columbia University Library System Mission: The SEDAC Long-Term Archive acquires, preserves, and maintains the content of selected high-quality data, data products, documentation, and services relevant to human dimensions of global change in a digital form to support the discovery, access, and use of archived resources by scientific, educational, and decision-making communities for at least the next 50 years. Currently being implemented using Fedora, an open source digital object repository and asset management system SEDAC Long-Term Archive

  18. Discovery, Access, and Delivery of Data for the International Polar Year (DADDI) User/Provider Workshop held at Lamont on 16-17 November Hands-on use of prototype interfaces for Arctic data search and metadata entry Demonstrations of data visualization tools and interfaces ROSES ACCESS project led by NSIDC with SEDAC and the ORNL DAAC DADDI Workshop at SEDAC Mark Parsons of NSIDC observing Yuri Gorokhovich of SEDAC • M. Parsons and R. Chen invited to NSF Arctic System Science (ARCSS) Data-Modeling Workshop in Seattle (postponed from January 2007; C. Vorosmarty co-chair of org. comte.)
