Windows Vista • Windows Vista was released in January 2007 some five years after Windows XP • Vista aimed to provide features including • An enhanced user interface UI • Better security • Vista has been criticized for requiring a high spec system and there have been problems with device drivers Windows 7

Windows XP retention • Many users, including MMU, have retained XP since it is only feasible to support one OS because of: • Limited IT support • Existing PCs may be up to five years old and lack the specification to execute Vista • Concerns that benefits of Vista do not currently outweigh disadvantages Windows 7

  4. 3. Windows Vista Facts (pre release of Windows 7) • 200 million PCs use Vista • Most new PCs were supplied with Vista installed • However even with new PCs, suppliers offer a downgrade from Vista to XP which may cause fewer problems with applications designed for XP Windows 7

  5. 4. Windows 7 - promotion Microsoft are keen to promote Windows 7 because: • They would like to retire support for XP • They believe that the Vista problems are now history • This will prepare users for Windows 8 – a full 64-bit product Windows 7

  6. 5. Windows 7 features A version should run on any current x86 system including Atom systems Support for .Net Framework 4.0 which supports parallel processing Optimized fast boot-up and shutdown Better security Little to fine tune – runs out of the box better home networking Windows 7

  7. 6. Windows 7 – a hit ? Although Microsoft stated that Windows 7 is a major update, many view it as a minor release benefiting from experience with Vista The device driver problems of Vista are now sorted and the same drivers are used for W7 The hardware requirements are standard so the performance of a W7 system should be good Hopefully W7 will be offer a good experience and encourage wide adoption Windows 7

Windows 7 – true 64-bit ? 64-bit processing offers advantages for servers note: Server 7 will be 64-bit However a native 64-bit version of Word would offer few advantages So how does this apply to W7 ? W7 will support 64-bit applications as well as 32-bit applications Exercise: Which applications will migrate to native 64-bit ? Windows 7

More on W7 • Jump Lists allow users to find recently used programs and files • Support for touch screens – already demonstrated in Surface products • Most popular PC activity is browsing the Internet, so IE8 supports faster downloads and enhanced security • Better protection against network based attacks but operating in background Windows 7

More on W7 • Digital Living Room Network Alliance (DLNA) compliance in Windows Media Player (WMP) for easier media sharing • Bitlocker to Go for encrypting USB storage devices • Direct Access for network access without VPN, and new support for sensors and devices that will enable location-aware laptops Windows 7
