  3. Rebuilding the South • The war had dramatically changed the landscape of the South and the lives of southerners.

  4. The South After the Civil War • Southern soldiers • Many permanently disabled • Returned home: • Farms destroyed • Cities in ruins • Families were killed • Threat of starvation • Transportation and communication destroyed • Banks failed and merchants went bankrupt • Confederate currency worthless • All was lost except for their….. • DEBTS

  5. The Meaning of Freedom • Emancipation spread slowly • Held ceremonies to legalize marriages • Moved freely • Looked for relatives • Wanted to own land

  6. Planning Reconstruction • What is Reconstruction? • The process of reuniting the nation and rebuilding the southern states in the absence of slavery. • Government stepped in

  7. Lincoln’s Plan • Reunite the nation • Proposed a plan for readmitting the southern states • Offered amnesty, (an official pardon) for illegal acts supporting the rebellion • Who would receive amnesty? Southerners who would pledge an oath of loyalty to the U.S. and accept a ban on slavery.

  8. The Wade-Davis Bill • Republican members disagreed with Lincoln’s plan • Wade and Davis proposed a stricter alternative to Lincoln’s plan • A state had to meet two conditions before it could rejoin the Union • First-ban slavery • Second-majority of adult males in the state had to take the loyalty oath • Lincoln refused to sign this bill

  9. The Thirteenth Amendment • Made slavery illegal throughout the United States • Went into effect December 18, 1865

  10. The Freedmen’s Bureau • Established 1865 • Provided relief for all poor people • Black and white • In the South • Established more schools in the South Freedmen’s Bureau Relief for all poor Black or White

  11. A New President • Lincoln assassinated • April 14, 1865 • At Ford’s Theater • By John Wilkes Booth • Vice-President Andrew Johnson was sworn in

  12. Fun Facts • Andrew Johnson was a tailor’s apprentice • Started his own tailoring business • He was vice-president for less than six weeks
